Relaxation exercise is very effective for any type of headache, especially for migraine headaches. Several research studies have revealed that deep breathing, relaxing in dark sound-proof rooms, listening to mind-soothing natural music in a calm atmosphere are all very effective in improving the condition.
Whenever you find your pain intense, just close your eyes and lie on your back and breathe in and out slowly and then make your mind free of wandering thoughts through a positive mind conditioning approach. Relax your muscles from head to toe and be in this state for fifteen to twenty minutes. This is a very simple exercise that can be followed to ease the migraine pain.
Applying pressure and relaxing the affected region of your head whether it is in the form of massage or stretching work wonders if you start implementing this in your routine activity, particularly during the peak episodes of migraines.
The best you can do is by stretching your head to left and then to right followed by shoulders motions: up and forward and then up and backward. Similarly, you can also raise your chin up and forward and then towards each shoulder. Stretching like this for ten to twenty minutes and doing it twice a day, will surprisingly improve your condition.
When you do massage it should begin with a gentle pressure application at the pain site, and should be followed by a repetitive session involving pressure application by your thumb, index and middle finger for a few seconds, and then relieving pressure for another few seconds in a rhythmic cycles of five to ten sets each.
Initially begin the process like this, thereafter apply pressure with the palm and repeat the sets as usual. Once you finish this process, start rubbing temples, forehead, neck and back of your head for another few minutes.
Gradually involve complete head, neck, shoulders and back by gently applying pressure and rubbing them. Complete the entire massage within ten to twenty minutes and repeat it thrice daily to get maximum benefits of head massage.
This is very safe treatment as this can be done to anyone irrespective of any previous health condition. If migraine headache is associated with stiff neck due to pressure and if you find your neck tight due to stiffness of the neck region, then use warm cloth and put it on the affected area for a few minutes to relieve the pressure.
However, for a throbbing and pulsating pain in the temple region, icing the temples relieves the pain because the arteries carrying the blood to the brain region usually get inflamed, and therefore lowering the blood temperature lessens the pain gradually. Similarly, icing the other regions of your head like back, neck and forehead relieves the pain and reduces its intensity.
Warm water bath is a good measure particularly if it is taken early in the morning or a few minutes before taking rest. When you feel your pain intense, do some stretching as usual, and then relax for a few minutes.
After a few minutes, gently massage your neck, temples, forehead and complete head according to the technique you know best, and then finally take warm water bath.
Taking rest is the best measure to soothe the severe, throbbing and pulsating migraine pain. It is particularly helpful when the pain becomes extremely difficult to manage.
A few hours of good sleep and proper rest in a dark, sound-proof and cool room with proper aeration seems to be very effective in relieving pain and easing the stiffness of the head and neck region.
