5 Benefits Of Tea Tree Oil For Scalp Problems

Share

The essential oil extracted from the leaves of the tea tree plant, which is indigenous to Australia, is valued for its antimicrobial property. The Aboriginal healers have been using tea tree oil for centuries for treating skin infections. Tea tree oil also helps in providing relief from a number of scalp problems. It can be used in different ways to improve the health of the scalp, which is essential for supporting hair growth and strengthening the hair root.

Tea Tree Oil Is An Effective Remedy For The Following Scalp Problems:

Dandruff

Dandruff is the most common scalp problem that can be controlled with the help of tea tree oil. The anti-fungal property of the active components of tea tree oil helps in suppressing growth of the malassezia yeasts that are responsible for triggering excess shedding of the scalp skin. The best way to treat dandruff with tea tree oil is to mix four to five drops of tea tree oil with a tablespoon of warm coconut oil. Gently massage the scalp with the oil blend and leave it on your scalp at least for 2 hours. Wash your hair with mild shampoo.

Cradle Cap

Infantile seborrheic dermatitis, commonly known as cradle cap, characterized by scaly patches on the scalp, is usually caused by overstimulation of the oil glands and overgrowth of yeasts and bacteria. To loosen the crusts and reduce fungal and bacterial growth on the scalp, add few drops of tea tree oil to a baby shampoo and wash the baby’s scalp with it.

Scalp Eczema And Psoriasis

Tea tree oil also helps in reducing skin inflammation. Inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis that affects the scalp can be reduced by applying a mixture of coconut oil and tea tree oil to the scalp. The oil blend also helps in getting rid of the dry and flaky patches on the scalp associated with eczema or psoriasis.

Lice

Tea tree oil is also effective in banishing lice from your head. It works as a natural pesticide. However, it is free from side effects that are commonly associated with chemicals used for killing lice. Blend three tablespoons of warm olive oil or coconut oil with a teaspoon of tea tree oil. Cover your scalp and hair with the oil. Leave it on overnight. Next morning wash your hair with your regular shampoo.

Scalp Acne

The antibacterial property of tea tree oil helps in reducing acne breakouts on the scalp. Mix few drops of tea tree oil with a teaspoon of olive oil and apply it on the affected areas of the scalp. Leave it on for 30 minutes and then wash it off with cool water.
