White spots on nails, also known as milk spots, can occur because of various reasons. A white spot may appear on your nail when you injure your nail by banging your finger on a hard surface. Frequent manicures are often blamed for the white spots on nails associated with nail injury. White spots on multiple nails are a common sign of deficiency of certain nutrients such as protein, calcium and zinc. However, in most causes white spots on the nails are a sign of a fungal infection.
The simplest way to treat white spots on nails and protect the nails from microbes is to cover the nails with coconut oil. Coconut oil moisturizes the nails and forms a protective barrier around the nails that help in speeding up the healing process. The anti-fungal property of coconut oil stops fungal overgrowth and helps in getting rid of the white spots caused by fungal infection.
The white spots on the nails caused by fungal infection can be treated by soaking the affected finger in diluted vinegar. Mix ½-cup of vinegar with a cup of warm water and dip your fingers in the diluted vinegar for 5 to 10 minutes. The antifungal property of acetic acid in vinegar helps in clearing the spots and promotes healthy growth of the nails.
To treat the white spots on your nails, use hydrogen peroxide. This popular antiseptic, apart from killing the harmful microbes, helps in restoring the normal health of the nail tissues, thereby helping your nails to regain their natural appearance. Mix one teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide with half a cup of warm water. Dip your nails in the mixture for about 10 minutes.
Lemon juice, vinegar and Listerine are known for their antimicrobial property. Instead of using them separately to treat the white spots on the nails, you can combine them and prepare a powerful natural antimicrobial mixture to clear the white spots fast. With a cotton swab apply the mixture on the affected nail two to three times a day.
Prepare garlic oil by simmering 5 to 6 crushed garlic cloves in olive oil or coconut oil for 5 to 10 minutes. Apply the garlic oil on the affected nails two to three times daily to eliminate the white spots. The antifungal compounds in garlic oil help in destroying the microbes present in the nail bed. Furthermore, the oil moisturizes the nails and stimulates regeneration of the nail tissues.
