For some people like me an insect with just 6 legs is more than enough to send me scurrying for covers. Imagine something which has 8 legs and looks ridiculously creepy. This is enough to set my nightmare mode on. The only saving grace is that am not alone. Almost 70% of the population have a fear of spiders and would want to get rid of them. In some cases the fear is extreme and there is actually a separate branch that studies the fear of spider – Arachnophobia. Spiders have impacted our lives that much.

Except some of the spiders, most of them are non poisonous. They also help keep away pests like mosquitoes and flies. However, this does not justify their presence in our homes. They spin a huge amount web in their lifetime and trap dead insects in it. They leave behind an atmosphere which is dusty, unhygienic and ghoulish to look at. They often make their homes in the corners and cracks and sometimes even in our closets. Spiders on the whole are not safe for your house environment. Their bites are itchy and a few of them are poisonous too. It is better to get rid of them, if you feel their presence in your homes. There are many ways by which we can get rid of them naturally and by non toxic methods. Let us look a few of them.

1. Peppermint Oil

We all know that peppermint oil gives out a pleasant smell. The same can be said about its anti-repellent properties. They emit an extremely strong smell which does not go well with the spiders. As a result they get averse to the oil’s presence. Take a spray bottle and fill it with water. Now add a teaspoon of dish washing liquid and a tablespoon of peppermint oil. Give it a nice shake and spray it in the corners and crevices. Just a week’s usage will give out the desired results in driving the spiders out. Alternatively you can dip in small cotton balls in peppermint oil and place them in the gaps and crack around your house and windows.

2. White Vinegar

White vinegar is also another effective solution that can be used against the spiders and their habitats. Just like peppermint essential oil, white vinegar too emits a pungent smell that can deter spiders. Also, the acetic acid in it can kill spiders upon contact. Mix half a cup of water and half a cup of white vinegar and fill it in a spray bottle. Now spray this solution in the places where you see the spider infestation. Repeat daily for better results. The solution is extremely safe and non-toxic for you and your health.

3. Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus has many health benefits and the same can be said about the way in which it keeps a check on the insect population. Its strong smell deters the spiders from entering your house and closets. Dry out some eucalyptus leaves and keep them in your closets and drawer shelves and the region where you see the spider population. You can also use eucalyptus oil alternatively. Fill a spray bottle with water and add in about 10 drops of eucalyptus oil into it. Shake it well and spray it in the places which are spider prone and near your doors and windows.

4. Diatomaceous Earth

In case using oils are not your cup of cake and you do not want the smell of such oils try out Diatomaceous Earth powder. These are naturally-formed fossils of microscopic water-dwellers known as diatoms. The true beauty of the product lies in the efficiency by which it takes care of the pest control. It has microscopic razor like sharp edges which can braze the skin of a spider when it crawls over it. Once the skin gets cut, the fluid gets drained out of it, leading to its death. Diatomaceous Earth is safe and extremely efficient in curbing the spider menace. Put a layer of it in windowsills, basement and corner cracks. Do not dissolve them in water and use it, as it will not work.

5. Tobacco

Tobacco is certainly injurious to health and you should refrain from it at all levels. However, they have an interesting usage of discouraging the spiders from entering your house. Tobaccos emit a smell that does not seem to go well with spiders. They avoid the places, when they notice such smell. Boil a tablespoon of tobacco powder in a cup of water. Squeeze a lemon into this mix. Once it cools drain it and transfer it to a spray bottle. Use them in corners and places where you see them. Repeat daily for about a week and notice a significant reduction in the spider population.
