Hemorrhoids are vascular structures inside the anal canal that control stools. When infected, they get inflamed and cause immense pain. Apart from this, a lot of itching, burning, and pain during bowel movement are encountered. The lower portion of anus gets swollen because of increased pressure. A number of problems may be associated with hemorrhoids like constipation, anal infections, bleeding, itching etc. Hemorrhoids are very common among pregnant women and children.
It is of two types; internal hemorrhoids and external hemorrhoids depending on whether the infected area is inside the anus or outside the anus. There are herbal remedies available through which hemorrhoids can be treated but one should always consult the concerned doctor before taking any action.
Herbal Remedies for Hemorrhoids
Chebulic Myrobalan
Used in Ayurvedic medicine, it is also known as Terminalia chebula. It is a popular medicinal herb used for treatment of hemorrhoids. It has anti-inflammatory properties and cures constipation. One can also preserve it for frequent use by roasting the fruit in oil. ½ spoon of it can be taken before going to sleep which helps in relaxing bowel movement and treating piles. It can also be added in water to make a paste. This paste is beneficial for bleeding hemorrhoids. It also strengthens the stomach.
As it contains an astringent, it is commonly used for homeopathic treatment. By acting as laxative compound, it provides relieves from pain. It can be used both in internal and external hemorrhoids. It is also one of the constituent herbs of Triphala. It contains chebulinic acid that has medicinal properties. In addition, it also contains gallic acid, tannic acid, resin and anthraquinone.
Triphala
Consuming triphala is good for reducing hemorrhoids related problems. Triphala is a combination of 3 medicinal herbs and is very effective for medication purposes. It is one of the best herbs for hemorrhoids and has been in use from the ancient time. It is a dried form of 3 fruits viz. haritaki, amalaki and bibhitaki. It is effective in external hemorrhoid and relieves constipation as well. It is good for digestive system and cleanses toxins from body.
It is easily available in the form of capsules in medical stores and can be consumed as directed on the label. Usually 2 tablets 2-3 times per day after meals are used for effective medication. It has anti-inflammatory properties and thus heals the wounds well. It acts as a blood purifier and helps in detoxification of lever. It regulates bowel movement and digestive processes inside the body.
Sesame Seeds
Sweetmeats can be prepared from sesame seeds which are effective against bleeding piles. After boiling in water they can be consumed as drinks. 20-25 sesame seeds can be taken in water and boiled. After straining the liquid and cooling it, consume it twice or thrice a day. Continue this for at least a month. If you are suffering from bleeding hemorrhoids, chew 60 gm of black sesame seeds. Honey added with these seeds is also good for constipation. Black sesame seeds can also be very effective after including in food.
Their effect is more than that of white sesame. Sesame promotes blood circulation and prevents congestion. You can also use sesame oil for directly applying on the external hemorrhoids. Oil prepared from sesame seeds is rich in vitamin E and is a good healing agent because of its anti-inflammatory and anti-viral properties. It penetrates the tissue quickly and is one of the oldest healing oils. A paste of boiled sesame seeds can be consumed every day with small amount of bitter.
Lady’s Mantal
It is an herbaceous perennial plant, native to Europe and Asia. It is also known as yarrow and is easily available at the health store. Tea prepared from lady’s mantal can be helpful for hemorrhoids. It can also be applied on the affected area with cotton many times a day. One should frequently replace the cotton with a new one. It is effective in external as well as internal hemorrhoids.
It prevents inflammation and provides relief from pain. The tannin contained in this herb is responsible for its medicinal properties. It is very beneficial in inflamed wounds. It is considered to be one of the best wound herbs because of its sedative and styptic properties.
Neem
Neem is one of the most effective herbs for treating hemorrhoid symptoms. Neem oil is a very effective natural essential oil. 2 drops of neem oil can be applied once a day on the affected area. It reduces inflammation caused by the affected veins. It also provides relief from pain and removes discomfort associated with hemorrhoids.
It has anti-bacterial properties that removes toxins and prevents constipation. It soothes the external hemorrhoid and controls bleeding. It also improves blood circulation.
Calendula
Commonly called as Marigold, calendula can be used for topical medication. Cream prepared from calendula leaves is considered as the best remedy for hemorrhoids. It is used for external hemorrhoids and is helpful for skin problems also. It reduces irritation, burning, infection and pain around the affected area. The anti-inflammatory properties of calendula reduce swelling and help in speedy recovery.
Few Drops of calendula tincture can be mixed in 2 tablespoons of water and can be applied on the hemorrhoids. Calendula and arnica can also be used in combination. Calendula is also available in the form of cream or ointment which is very effective for skin infections.
Goldenseal Root
The dried root of goldenseal can be used for making medicine. It is used for curing urinary tract infection, constipation and reducing pain. It is effective in reducing internal bleeding. It is either taken as an ointment or as a capsule. It contains berberine that affects disease causing fungi and bacteria. It is a natural antibiotic available at health stores.
It can cure both internal and external hemorrhoids. Powder in the goldenseal root capsule can be emptied and mixed with that of white oak bark along with aloe vera gel. Consume this at night and by the time you wake up hemorrhoid is almost gone. It should not be taken daily for more than one week. But it should not be used by pregnant woman.
