Establish A Routine
Understanding your body’s natural rhythms goes a long way in helping solve sleep related problems. According to that establish a routine for your body by sleeping and waking up in the morning at scheduled, perfectly slotted timings.
Avoid eating large meals, when it’s nearing bedtime. This is because your body tends to expend energy to digest a large meal which can cause disturbances in sleep or worse, can even wake you up from your sleep. Additionally, drinking or consuming sugar or caffeine late in the day or during odd times should be avoided as it decreases sleep.
Exercising too close to bedtime also disrupts your sleep patterns as exercising releases endorphins that tend to energize you and hence keeps you awake. A gentle walk and relaxing yoga helps prepare you for sleep.
Using a couple of pillows to elevate your head, especially those pillows which are designed with a hole in the middle so that the base of your head rests in the hole is of major help.
When eating food, make sure to chew your food on both sides of your mouth. By keeping the tongue on the palate, opening your mouth during chewing can be avoided. This method helps in reinforcing the movement of the tongue and jaw, which helps in reducing problems related to sleep apnea.
Drinking a glass of warm milk with a tinge of honey right before you go to sleep helps relax and get some sleep. Eating a light snack, maybe a fruit or bread, taken an hour or so before bedtime, keeps you from waking up feeling hungry in the middle of the night. But caffeine, heavy meals and foods that contain a lot of sugar should be avoided as they cause disturbed sleep.
