This is perhaps the most common and widely used natural treatment for sore throat. Even doctors recommend salt water gargling for alleviating bad throat. Salt cleans and kills the infection whereas warm water soothes the throat relieving the pain. Take a glass of drinking water and heat it up until it is warm.
Add a spoon of salt and mix thoroughly. Gargle with this solution at least twice in a day for relief. The pain relieving property of this solution is quite temporary but if done frequently it can help the bad throat immensely. Another gargling remedy is apple cider vinegar gargle.
Dilute 1 tablespoon of vinegar in half a glass of warm water and gargle 2-3 times in a day for relief. You may also consume this vinegar solution by adding a spoon of honey in it while it is warm. However, be observant about your stomach because vinegar may cause acidity in some people. Adding 2 spoons of baking soda in a glass of warm water is also known to alleviate the symptoms of bad throat.
There are different types of teas that can help you in alleviating a bad throat. Tea is an excellent anti-oxidant and therefore it can aid in flushing out the toxins and infection from the body as well. Mix some crushed ginger in water and boil it thoroughly until the ginger is completely infused in the water.
Consume while it is warm. Basil is another herb that is good for treating the bad throat. Crush 5-6 leaves of basil and boil them in water. For increasing the potency of this solution, you may add some cinnamon and sugar. Plain green tea is also considered to be a good anti-oxidant and 2-3 cups of this warm tea can help with sore throat.
Carom seed infused water is also a great remedy for relieving a bad throat as it fights the infection from within the body. Turmeric infused milk can act as an anti-inflammatory agent and expedite the healing process of bad throat.
Eucalyptus oil has a property which expands the air tract around the throat as its vapours pass through. Add 1-2 drops of this oil in hot water and as the oil laden steam rises, inhale it with your mouth. This eases the mucous build up and soothes the throat.
Menthol oil which is a compound present in pepper mint also has the same property and can be used like eucalyptus for providing relief. In fact menthol is the main ingredient used in many lozenges that are sold in drug stores for relieving the painful bad throat. Inhalation of oil vapours is very helpful where bad throat is caused by allergic reaction from certain irritants.
Honey is an anti-bacterial agent and reduces the conditions within throat which leads to persistent cough that aggravates the soreness in the throat.
Honey is also a natural moisturizer, it moistens the throat and reduces inflammation. Mix a pinch of black pepper, small piece of crushed ginger in a spoonful of honey and consume thrice a day. You will have speedy recovery from sore throat. You may also crush some basil and add its juice to honey.
Drinking at least a 2 litres of water maintains lubrication in the throat and reduces cough. Drinking lukewarm water mixed with a spoon of honey would be more beneficial. Lubrication controls the inflammation and also shorten the duration of healing of bad throat.
Drinking juices can also serve the purpose however refrain from cold ones. Cucumber and water melon juices are best avoided when bad throat takes place due to a bout of cough and cold.
Garlic water is considered beneficial for bad throat. It has medicinal properties that kill bacteria. Garlic contains a compound called Allicin which actually contains these anti-bacterial properties.

Adding cloves to your tea is also beneficial in arresting the inflammation of the throat and reducing the coughing sensation. Adding a few granules of sugar and cardamom increases the potency of cloves in helping sore throat.
Humidifying your surroundings by letting the steam out in the room and especially while taking bath is considered beneficial for sore throat. While suffering from bad throat, ensure that you sleep elevated on 2 pillow as sleeping flat can aggravate the soreness. Smoking and alcohol must be banished as they both can increase the inflammation and alcohol causes dehydration.
Never breathe through your mouth as it further dries your throat. Avoid eating hard and stiff food ingredients instead go for soft breads, stews and soups. Taking Vitamin C rich food items like oranges and lemons strengthen your immunity and limit the spread of infection.
