5 Herbs For Allergies

Share

Allergy is a condition in which the body’s immune system responds to certain harmless substances. These may be anything around you, be it dust, pollens, animal dandruff or food. Yes! Some people might be allergic to certain foods and they prefer avoiding them. When your immune system responds to allergens, a compound called histamine is released inside body.

This compound is responsible for various allergic reactions that show out for example, runny nose, stuffy nose, watery eyes, rashes, inflammation. Allergies can vary from being mild to chronic. In extreme cases, it may really get problematic. If you know that you are allergic to a substance, then better keep any of the below herbs handy. These would help you in avoiding serious conditions and may reduce your immune system’s response to allergens over time.

Effective Herbs To Deal With Allergies

Garlic

Garlic is used for various medicinal purposes and is easily found in Mediterranean region. Garlic is a rich source of a flavonoid called quercetin. Quercetin is an anti histamine and works for allergies by reducing the level of histamines in body. Since histamines are responsible for causing the body to show allergic reactions, a reduction in the level serves the purpose. Around three garlic cloves can be consumed 2-3 times in a day.

Licorice

Licorice is a legume which is easily found in south Europe and some parts of Asia. The herb grows around 1 m in height and has purplish flowers. It can be used in case of inflammation related allergies e.g. asthma that leads to inflammation in air passage. Licorice works by enhancing the production of cortisol.

Cortisol is a hormone produced in human body that reduces inflammation. Thus, licorice helps in getting rid of the problem by using body’s self defense mechanism. Add 20 grams of licorice in a cup of hot water and have it when you feel allergic. Licorice reduces the potassium level in your body and hence should not be consumed on a long term basis. Rather, keep it as an emergency dosage.

Reishi Mushroom

Reishi Mushroom is a soft mushroom with flat and reddish top. The mushroom is usually found in Eastern parts of Asia. It is a very good antioxidant and helps in keeping body clean. A cleaner body is less susceptible to allergic reactions as the antioxidants fight against free radicals which are otherwise problematic.

The mushroom contains certain polysaccharides which work to improve the immune system. Also, they contain triterpenes which prohibit the release of histamines in body. Reduced histamines mean reduced allergic reaction. The daily dosage of dried Reishi Mushrooms can vary from 1.5g to 9g.

Angelica

As a result, allergic reactions do not show up in the patient. One can consume the herb by using it in tea. Add half teaspoon of Angelica in a cup of boiling water. Let it cook on low flame for sometime, just as you make tea. Later you can add honey or anything you like, for taste. Sip the tea slowly while it is hot.

Stinging Nettle

Stinging nettles have soft green leaves which bear chemicals. These chemicals are the herb’s defense mechanism and cause irritation once touched. Hence, it is advised to deal with the plant in gloves.

The herb is usually found in Asia, Europe, North America and North Africa. The herb works by blocking histamine receptors, preventing histamines from showing allergic reactions. You can consume around 250 mg of freeze dried Nettle leaves, 2-3 times a day.
