Ulcerative colitis (Colitis) is an inflammation of the colon. It is due to overreaction of the body’s immune response, due to faulty signals of considering normal bacteria to be a pathogen. The other factors are heredity, environmental factors, certain medications etc. Mostly the ulcers are formed the lower intestine and the rectum.

But it may affect the whole intestine. The symptoms differ from person to person. It may be belly pains and cramps, diarrhea, bleeding from the rectus, fever, not feeling hungry, loose  weight. Some people also complain about joint pains, eye problems or liver disease.


9 Home Remedies For Ulcerative Colitis

Papaya

Intake of papaya juice is beneficial in treating ulcerative colitis. It is rich in Vitamin C, E and betacarotene, powerful antioxidants which makes healing faster. Omega 3 fatty acids present in papaya have got anti inflammatory properties which prove beneficial in alleviating inflammation.

It is an excellent source of dietary fiber  which helps to treat the disease. Before intake of papaya juice consult your physician as it may be allergic in some people.


Sweet Potato

You can have steamed sweet potato, to this include one tablespoon extra virgin olive oil .Olive oil when added provides required fat which increases the uptake of beta carotene from sweet potatoes.

Beta Carotene is an antioxidant which makes healing faster. It is also rich in anti inflammatory properties which prove  beneficial in alleviating inflammations thus beneficial in treating ulcerative colitis.


Avocado

Intake of steamed avocado is beneficial in treating ulcerative colitis. Avocado is rich in omega 3 fatty acids, an anti inflammatory beneficial in reducing  inflammation. It is rich in Vitamin A and E, an antioxidant which makes healing faster.


Apple

Peel the apple and cook it. Add pinch of nutmeg and have it. The skin of the apple though high fiber, diet is an insoluble fiber thus aggravating colitis.

The peeled  cooked apple is a soluble fiber which produces soft stools and good motions and is also helpful to pacify the irritation thus beneficial in treating ulcerative colitis.


Drumstick

Vitamin A in drumstick leaves is a fat soluble antioxidant which repairs the mucus membrane. Its anti inflammatory properties help in reducing the pain and  discomfort caused by ulcers. Women’s should not take this during pregnancy.


Calendula

Put one or two tablespoons of dried flowers in hot water for ten minutes and have it as a tea. Intake of Calendula tea can prove beneficial in treating ulcerative  colitis.

It has got anti inflammatory which alleviates inflammation and antioxidant properties boost the immune system thus making heal faster.


Coconut Water

The electrolyte content and plasma content found in coconut water has been found similar to human blood which prevents dehydration and replenishes  the body. It is soothing to the soft mucosa of the colon.


Carrot Juice

Regular intake of this juice proves beneficial in ulcerative colitis.  It is rich in vitamin A, a natural antioxidant making heal faster and anti inflammatory  properties alleviates inflammation thus  proves beneficial for ulcerative colitis.


Ripe Bananas

Having ripe bananas is beneficial as it is easily digestible, relieves acute symptoms associated with ulcerative colitis and makes healing faster.

You can have a  banana in a day but people taking potassium supplements should consult their physician before eating large amount of bananas.
