Toenail fungus is one of the most common nail abnormalities, generally characterized by gradual destruction, dis-figuration and discoloration of toenails. This infection is caused by the growth of dermatophytes, a fungal group. As a common symptom, the toenails become whitish, yellowish or brownish. Other symptoms include itchiness and rashness on the affected areas. Following are some of the best natural remedies to treat toenail fungus.
Consuming ½ tsp. of turmeric extract 2-3 times a day can be very beneficial in treating toenail fungus. But, for faster results, you must also soak a clean cotton ball in a mixture of turmeric oil and water (in the ratio of 1:2) and apply it directly to the affected areas.
Prepare a herbal mixture by adding four ounces of vinegar, 1/8 tsp. of peppermint tincture and 4 tsp. each of lavender and tea tree tinctures together. Pour this mixture in a tub filled with lukewarm water. Put both your feet in the tub and keep them there for 15-20 minutes. Then, bring your feet out and dry them with a soft towel. Use this remedy at least three times daily.
The natural anti-fungal properties of olive leaf extract make it a powerful remedy for toenail fungus. You can apply the extract directly over the infected areas. In addition to that, you can also consume ¼ tsp. of the extract 2-3 times daily.
Soak a soft, cotton washcloth thoroughly in apple cider vinegar and rub the affected areas gently with it. It relieves itchiness and heals the infection faster.
The anti-fungal properties of green tea extracts have the ability to kill candida glabrata, another fungal group that causes this type of infection. Therefore, applying a thin layer of green tea extract using a cotton ball can also be very beneficial in the treatment of toenail fungus.
You can buy lemongrass tea bags from a local health food store and dip them in a cup of hot water to prepare the tea. Alternatively, the tea can also be prepared by steeping one teaspoon of crushed lemongrass in one cup of boiling water for 10-15 minutes. Drink this tea a least two times daily. To get rid of toenail fungus faster, you are also advised to rub the used tea bags gently on the affected areas.
Goldenseal is another powerful natural anti-fungal agent. Prepare a tea by simmering six tsp. of dried goldenseal leaves in one cup of water for 20 minutes. Filter the liquid and drink it. Consume one cup of goldenseal tea three times daily. For faster healing, you can also apply the tea (when it cools down a little) to the infected areas using a clean cotton ball.
Ginger tea can also be used as a remedy for toenail fungus in a similar way. You can drink a cup of ginger tea, prepared by simmering two ounces of fresh ginger root in eight ounces of water for 20 minutes. In addition to that, soak a cotton ball in ginger tea and place it on the affected areas. Leave the cotton ball there for five minutes. Use both these remedies three times daily. Remember, it takes time to heal toenail fungus completely. You cannot expect the infection to go away within just a couple of days. So, be consistent with the remedies and the fungal infection will be cured eventually in a few weeks.
