6 Remedies For Mastitis

Share

Mastitis or inflammation of the tissues present in the breasts is associated with the formation of painful lumps on the nipples, redness and even fever. Mastitis is really painful and doctors usually prescribe antibiotics which can reach your baby’s system through your milk. The affected breast swells up and there can be burning sensations as well.

Some women also have joint aches and fatigue as symptoms of mastitis. Mastitis can occur for a number of reasons, not properly removing the milk from the breasts after breastfeeding being one. Blocking of the milk ducts due to tight clothing can be another reason. Infections from the skin or baby’s mouth entering the milk duct can also lead to mastitis. Some of the herbal remedies for mastitis are:

Best Herbal Remedies For Mastitis

Echinacea

This is one of the most popular herbal remedies for mastitis as Echinacea is widely used to treat any kind of infection and inflammation. This herb boosts the immune system as it has antimicrobial properties.

Echinacea capsules are locally available and should be taken 2 times every day to reduce the infection. Herbalists also suggest making a paste of this herb and applying locally on the swollen part of the breast to get relief from pain and tenderness. You can also apply Echinacea tincture on the affected area.

Garlic

Garlic is a strong antibacterial herb and can treat mastitis. Take 1-2 cloves of garlic and chop them into small pieces. Keep aside for a few minutes. Add honey and a pinch of cayenne pepper. Mix the ingredients properly. Make sure the garlic pieces get covered with honey. Swallow this mixture and do not chew. This mixture along with Echinacea capsules can prevent the pain and also kill the germs.

Calendula

This herb can be used as an herbal compress to reduce the pain and swelling. Take few calendula leaves and put them into the blender. Add a little water. Blend for some time to get a paste and apply it on the affected breast. You can put into the freezer so that you can use it in the future. This will clean the milk ducts and also soothe the nipples. Apply at least 4-5 daily to get relief.

Dandelion Root

Dandelion root can also be used to treat the symptoms like inflammation and pain. Take dried dandelion roots and chop them into tiny pieces. Bring a cup of water to boil and add the roots. Steep the mixture for 10-15 minutes. Keep aside for some time. Stir and keep it undisturbed. Strain and drink the tea 3-4 times a day to get relief from pain. Dandelion roots can also be used as a hot compress.

Marshmallow

Take few marshmallow roots and soak them in a container containing boiling water. Steep for some time and keep the container undisturbed overnight. Next morning boil the mixture again and try soaking your breasts when the infusion cools down a bit. Keep your breasts soaked till the infusion cools down to room temperature. Repeat twice daily.

Comfrey Leaves

Take 15-20 dried comfrey leaves and put them into the blender. Add water and blend till they form a smooth paste. Apply this paste 2-3 times daily on the affected area to get relief. Calendula leaves can also be added along with comfrey leaves for better results. The effect is soothing and provides great relief from pain. Drink plenty of water to keep your system clean. You can also apply cold compress and maintain good hygiene. Wear loose fitting clothes, so that your breasts can breathe. All the above herbal remedies for mastitis have given positive results.
