Menopause is one of the phases in life that every woman goes through when the estrogen production is phased out by the ovaries. This phase is when most women claim to go through unpleasant mood swings, hot flashes, and night sweats that can be very uncomfortable and can often require medical assistance.

But if you are not very keen on using drugs and medications for menopause then using herbs is a viable option. There are innumerable herbs that can eliminate or reduce the severity of the symptoms of menopause.

Black Cohosh

Hot flashes and night sweats are two of the most common menopause symptoms that can be treated with black cohosh supplements. Known to have estrogen-like characteristics, black cohosh supplements can be ingested once you start experiencing an episode of hot flash. Being effective does not make it hundred percent safe and there are times when one can experience headaches and stomach aches because of black cohosh; hence, consulting a medical practitioner is mandatory. Also, if one is on birth control pills or is pregnant then one must not take black cohosh in any form.


Dong Quai

Considered the Chinese herb for menopause, dong quai is known to treat hot flashes. Like black cohosh, dong quai is known to contain estrogen-like characteristics that can treat menopause effectively. But in case one is on breast cancer medication then one must not take dong quai supplements and capsules.


Ginkgo Biloba

Found in parts of North America andEurope, gingko biloba is one of the oldest herbs that are known to effectively treat menopause. The effectiveness of the herb is attributed to the presence of active compounds such as terpene lactones and ginkgo flavone glycosides, which also improves memory and concentration that is greatly affected in women going through menopause. For best results, one can simply opt to take gingko biloba capsule or supplements; alternatively, one can also steep the herb leaves into hot water and make herbal tea for daily drinking purpose.


Juniper

Botanically called Juniperus communis, the herb is an effective treatment for joint and muscle aches, two of the common symptoms of menopause. The plant is known for its prostaglandin-inhibiting affect that regulates the bodily processes and functionality. The herb, when taken on a regular basis, can also treat skin inflammation that can occur in women undergoing menopause.


Devil’s Claw

Also known as Harpagophytum procumbens, it is an African herb that can treat joint pains accompanying women undergoing menopause. The tuberous medicinal root of the plant is also used to treat other disorders such as muscle pain and arthritis. Very effective for any kind of body pain, the herb is anti-inflammatory that can treat headache, and generalized body aches.


Ginseng

If you are suffering from regular mood swings and bouts of depression then one of the best solutions is to take ginseng supplements. A popular herbal remedy for menopause, ginseng can be found in most herbal stores. Though it is effective, it is recommended that one consult a doctor before taking ginseng supplements as it can affect the hormonal balance.


Sage

Joint pains are one of the most uncomfortable menopause symptoms that can be excruciatingly painful. Treatment is possible if one can take sage supplements. Though it is an effective herb, many consider it to be mild in nature; hence, one can also combine it with other herbs such as alfalfa to make it even more effective and eliminate joint pains.


Red Clover

Another herbal medicine for menopause that is very effective in eliminating joint pains is red clover. Consisting of phytoestrogens, a natural substance that has estrogen-like qualities and treats hot flashes and mood swings.


Wild Yam

Most women going through menopause complain of body aches and this can be treated by wild yam supplements. Containing progesterone, wild yam capsules and tablets once ingested works to enhance the body’s immune system that helps in reducing the severity of the pain.


Chasteberry

Known to improve hormonal balance, it is also known as vitex. The herb once taken by the patient works to harmonize the progesterone and estrogen level; this helps in reducing the pain felt during menopause and also among women suffering from irregular period.


Licorice Root

Containing isoflavones and lignans, licorice root is known to cleanse the system and regulate the progesterone and estrogen levels. Known as one of the most effective menopausal herbs, it should not accompany blood pressure drugs and medications.


Alfalfa

Containing high levels of phytoestrogens, the herb is very effective in dealing with hot flashes that are triggered as soon as a woman reached menopause.


Evening Primrose Oil

Stomach cramps are one of the most painful symptoms of menopause. Many women resort to medications to treat it but with evening primrose oil one can treat it without any drugs and over-the-counter medications that can trigger other side effects. The oil is known to contain high levels of gamma-linolenic acid, which regulates the prostaglandin level in the body, which in turn helps in eliminating cramps and muscle spasms.


Lady’s Mantle

Botanically called Alchemilla vulgaris, it is a favored herb to treat gynecological disorders including menopause and perimenopause. Known to contain high levels of tannins and flavonoids, lady’s mantle can treat body ache and also excessive bleeding that occurs in few menopausal patients.


American Cranesbill

Also called Geranium maculatum, it is grown in parts ofNorth America and is considered as a strong astringent that treats pains and bleeding problems. True to its characteristics, the herb contains high levels of tannins which can be very effective for women suffering from excessive bleeding during menopause.


Red Raspberry

If you are suffering from excessive body pain then red raspberries can certainly help you. Also known as Rubus idaeus, one can either take the fresh raw fruits or consume the supplements that are readily available in herbal stores. Like most menopause treating herbs, raspberry can also treat excessive blood flow problems. But to understand the perfect dosage of the herb, one must consult a medical practitioner who can also reflect on the possible side effects.
