Anemia means a deficiency of blood in the body due to decrease in the number of red blood cells or lack of hemoglobin in the body. The problem of anemia leads to lack of oxygen in the organs as the hemoglobin is responsible for the transport of oxygen from the lungs to the various tissues of the body. The ability of each hemoglobin molecule to bind oxygen decrease as there is a deficiency of numerical development of hemoglobin.
Anemia is of three types which includes excessive blood loss known as hemorrhage, excessive destruction of blood cells known as hemolysis and deficiency of red blood cell which is called by the name hematopoiesis. The main cause of anemia is the nutritional deficiency of iron. This problem can be rectified with the help of some herbs.
Herbal Remedies For Anemia
Alfalfa
The alfalfa herb helps to bring the level of hemoglobin into the normal range in a person. This herb is rich in beta carotene, zeaxanthu, lutein and chlorophyll and also contains some important minerals like calcium, copper, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium and zinc. It has antioxidant properties.
You can take this herb in the form of alfalfa tablets or sprouted seeds in raw form. Make sure to rinse the sprouts with water properly to remove bacteria from it. However if you are taking any blood thinning medication or corticosteroid then you should not take this herb as it will null the effects of these drugs.
Red Raspberry Leaf
The red raspberry leaf has high doses of iron in it. It contains vitamin B complex, beta carotene, vitamin C and E, calcium, potassium and phosphorous. This herb is very effective for the treatment of anemia and to tone the uterus, increase the production of milk in nursing mothers, decrease the problem of nausea and helps to ease the process of delivering and labor pains. This herb should be taken in the form of red raspberry supplements or tea or extract. However this herb is not recommended for the treatment of any kind of complications that creep up during pregnancy.
Nettles
Nettle is a rich source of iron, vitamin C and chlorophyll which fulfills the deficiency of iron in the body. The flowers, leaves and roots of this plant can be used safely for the treatment of anemia. You can take this herb in the form of tea or liquid extract.
Yellowdock
Yellowodock root contains emodin, magnesium, nepodin, oxalic acid, selenium, silicon, sodium and tannins. These constituents help to increase the level of hemoglobin in the body. This herb can be taken in the form of infusion or tea. But research has not approved the safety of this herb for use in pregnancy. The fresh leaves of this herb should be boiled in water before taking them to remove oxalic acid from it as this acid is not recommended for oral use.
Indian Gooseberry or Emblic Myrobalan
Indian Gooseberry is the best source of vitamin C. It has antioxidant and adaptogen properties. This is the safest herb to use and can be taken by pregnant women and children as well.
