7 Herbal Remedies for Constipation in Adults
Psyllium Husk
Psyllium husk is a widely used herb to treat constipation. This herb is a type of soluble fiber that provides food to the good bacteria which aids in the process of digestion.
Add 1 to 2 teaspoon of this herb to 1 cup of water and consume in the evening. It will provide relief from constipation.
California Buckthorn, Beneficial in Chronic Constipation
Also known as cascara sagrada, the herb is a popularly used laxative for the treatment of adult constipation. It contains a compound known as “anthroquinones” which stimulates colon contractions and encourages bowel movement. The herbs can be used over an extended period of time (30 days) and in combination with other herbs for better results. However it shows results within 1 or 2 days. After 30 days take a break from it or it can be habit-forming.
Recommended dose is 350 to 1000mg before bed. Alternatively you can take this herb in tea form. In three cups of boiling water add 1 teaspoon of the herb. Drink 1 cup before bed. It helps to cleanse colon and treat chronic constipation.
Colon Cleanser Tea
Prepare an herbal colon cleanser tea at home. Add 2 teaspoon of ginger, preferably crushed, and 2 cloves to a cup of boiling water. Put some mint and basil leaves to the water. Let the mixture steep for few minutes till it turns brown.
Drink this herbal concoction few times a day. Ginger, clove, basil, and mint are helpful in cleansing colon and improving the digestive system.
Dandelion Root to Promote Bacterial Function
Dandelion root contains diuretic properties and acts as a mild laxative in easing constipation. It encourages good bacterial function in the digestive tract and helps in bowel movement.
Prepare a dandelion tea by putting one teaspoon of the chopped root in eight oz of boiling water. Let it boil for 10 minutes. Strain the mixture to remove residues. Drink the herbal tea three cups a day to get relief from chronic constipation.
Bael Fruit
Also known as Aegle marmelos, this herb is also an effective form of laxative. It helps to dissolve and flush out the waste materials in the intestines. Take one ripe fruit and blend in water.
Drink the mixture once in a day and continue for 2 to 3 months. Or you can eat this fruit raw before dinner. 60 gm is recommended for adults.
Licorice
Licorice is also a natural laxative used in the treatment of constipation in adults. You can prepare a tea or mix licorice powder in one glass of water with jaggery to get rid of constipation.
Fenugreek to Treat Constipation
Fenugreek herb is very beneficial in treating constipation. It acts a as a gently laxative, provides volume to the stool and encourages its movement.
Take 1 teaspoon of fenugreek seeds before bed. Alternatively, boil some fenugreek seeds and add 2 smashed figs to it. Consume the mixture before bed.
