Herbal Remedies For Dandruff

Dandruff is an unhealthy scalp condition and may result into several hair problems such as hair fall, bald patches, and scalp infections. The sutitaion becomes critical when dandruff is accompanied by a scalp infection.

Herbs are very effectively used to treat dandruff since time immortal. Not only this herbs are effective in preventing dandruff but it also treats fungal scalp infections effectively.

Herbal Remedies To Get Rid Of Dandruff

Rosemary To Rejuvenate The Scalp

Rosemary, also known as “Rosmarinus officinalis” is an herb used in different ancient remedies to treat dandruff. It also helps to rejuvenate the scalp and maintain its moisture content. Rosemary is also used as an ingredient in several shampoos and hair tonics meant for dandruff.

Soak 1 oz. rosemary in 2 cups of water. Let it steep for 24 hours. Use it as a hair rinse the next morning. This herbal rinse can be used daily to control dandruff and maintain moisture in the scalp. To maximize the results many herbalists have suggested combining sage with rosemary. In this case, you can take equal amount of both the herbs to prepare the concoction. Thyme and parsley can also be added to the infusion to get great results.


Aloe Vera- a Natural anti-fungal Agent

The soothing and healing properties of Aloe Vera make it an active ingredient in many of the modern treatments. Researches have found that aloe gel obtained from the leaves of aloe vera herb is a concentration of minerals, vitamins and moisturizing properties that moisturizes the scalp and normalizes dandruff. Aloe is also considered as an anti-fungal agent; thereby, reduces dandruff due to fungal infections, soothes inflammation and promotes healing of the scalp.

Break an aloe leaf and scrape the gel. Massage the gel evenly on your scalp and leave overnight. Next morning wash your hair with an aloe vera shampoo. Alternatively, you can also apply aloe vera oil onto your scalp. Continue aloe treatment for dandruff at least for 1 week.


Thyme

Thyme is known for its aromatic, anti-fungal, and antiseptic properties. Take 4 teaspoon full of dried thyme and boil it in 2 cups of water.

Let it stay for 2 minutes and strain the mixture. Now massage the potion onto your damp hair. Do not rinse. Its antiseptic properties eradicate dandruff successfully.

 


Alfalfa For Dry Scalp Dandruff

The herb Alfalfa has properties that help to prevent dryness in scalp that may contribute to dandruff. It also builds good hair texture and promotes hair growth. This herb can be crushed and applied to the scalp. Alternatively you can extract oil from the herb and combine it with lettuce and carrot juice for greater benefits.

These vegetables are high in nutrients so the benefits maximize when the goodness of the herb is combined with the nutritional benefits of these vegetables.


Sesame Oil

Sesame oil contains properties that keep the skin soft and moisturized. It is also rich in potent antioxidants and acts as an anti-inflammatory agent.

Applying warm sesame oil regularly on hair before bed reduces dandruff due to dry scalp. You can also prepare your own herbal combination using sesame oil. Blend three tablespoon of sesame oil, half teaspoon of lemon juice, and two tablespoon of ginger juice. Massage this herbal concoction onto your scalp for 3 times a week. Sesame oil also reduces inflammation and fungal infections on scalp.


Burdock

Burdock is popularly used to treat assorted skin conditions including dandruff.  Prepare a strong decoction by boiling burdock root in 1 cup water. Apply it externally on your scalp. The concoction prepared out of burdock root helps to treat dandruff very effectively. The decoction can also be consumed to flush out toxins from the body.

Eliminating toxins from the body promotes healthy scalp leading to dandruff free hair. Also, apply burdock root oil directly to the scalp to eliminate dandruff.


Comfrey

Comfrey possesses a chemical known as “allantoin” that helps to fight off dandruff. Simply add few drops of comfrey tincture to any herbal shampoo and wash your hair.

You will get this tincture in any herbal store. Shampoos containing comfrey as an ingredient are also available in health stores and can be used to treat dandruff.


Eucalyptus to Remove Dandruff Flakes

Eucalyptus has properties that help to remove flakes from the scalp. Oil extracted from this herb is the best treatment for dandruff.

Take few drops of eucalyptus oil and mix it with coconut oil. Massage the oil onto your scalp and leave overnight. Use this remedy at least once or twice per week to prevent dandruff.


Licorice For Dandruff Due To Oily Scalp

Excessive oil secretion in the scalp may also result in dandruff. Licorice contains a chemical known as “glycyrrhizin” that reduces the secretion of oil in the scalp.

Prepare a rinse for your hair by adding one teaspoon of licorice into a bottle of vinegar. Use the solution as a rinse for your hair. Alternatively, you can also use licorice tea to rinse your hair.


Tea Tree Oil – a Natural Antiseptic Agent

The anti fungal properties present in tea tree oil helps to treat “Pityrosporum ovale”, a yeast that contributes to the formation of dandruff.

Add tea tree oil to your regular hair oil and rub gently onto your scalp in circulating motion. It will guarantee maximum absorption of the oil into your scalp. Tea tree oil application is recommended at least once a week.


Horsetail

Horsetail is another effective herb known for treating dandruff. Take one cup of boiling water and add two tablespoon of dried horsetail to it. Let it steep for 15 minutes. Now use the herb infusion as a hair rinse.


Ash Gourd

The peel and seeds of Ash gourd help to keep the scalp moisturized and prevents dandruff from coming back. Regular use of the herb is recommended to get rid of dandruff.


Fenugreek

The seeds of fenugreek herb possess curative powers and used for eliminating dandruff.  Soak fenugreek seeds in water for 4 to 5 hours. This will soften the seeds.

Now grind the seeds to prepare a paste and apply it onto your scalp. Let it stay for 2 hours and then wash off with an herbal shampoo. Practice this herbal remedy twice or thrice a week to cure dandruff and prevent hair fall.


Indian Hemp

Indian hemp has also dandruff curing properties, according to American folklore. It also encourages hair growth. Crush this herb and extract the juices. Apply it onto your scalp and see the results.
