Impetigo is a highly infectious disease of the skin. It appears at the corners of lips, behind the ears, and on nose. It takes shape as a tiny blister which turns into eczema like sore and then turns into an oozing stage. It starts forming new blisters farther off as well as at the same place. Two types of bacteria are responsible for impetigo.

These bacteria may be present on the skin, but become infectious upon entering through the cuts and bruises. Impetigo generally catches hold of the children, but at times adults also fall prey to this.


5 Top Herbal Remedies For Impetigo

Olive Oil

Oilve oil treats impetigo as well as prevents this skin condition. Olive oil, being a mild antiseptic has two chemicals in its kitty, namely rutin and oleuropein. Both these chemicals act against bacteria. To treat yourself for impetigo you can apply a few drops of olive oil on the infected skin.

For best results apply it four times a day.As far as its preventive use is concerned see that you need it only if you have some cuts and are in the company of someone with impetigo. At the slightest hint of skin rash start applying olive oil at the point of rash.


Evening Primrose

Evening primrose oil is useful for treating impetigo. Its seeds contain gamma linoleic acid (GLA) which is an essential fatty acid. Evening primrose oil is helpful for many diseases due to the presence of GLA.

It can be bought from the health stores as tincture or in the form of capsule containing standardized dose.Those who suffer from bleeding disorders or seizures are advised not to use evening primrose.


Myrrh

Myrrh is called guggul in Ayurvedic herbal system. The shrub is widespread in the Mediterranean region. The resin obtained from the bark of this shrub is called guggul which has been used in perfumes and ointment.

It is burnt as an incense during rituals and in religious places. Myrrh has strong antimicrobial properties with broad spectrum usage.You can use it in combination with goldenseal, but should not be applied near mouth and eyes.


Tea Tree Oil

A couple of drops of tea tree oil are to be applied at the affected part of the skin, it is good herbal remedy for impetigo. If it is the scalp that has impetigo, mix a few drops of tea tree oil and wash he scalp as usual. On the other places just a few drops of tea tree oil are be applied directly on the infected area.


Goldenseal

The yellow rhizomes which are loaded with medicinal properties are responsible for getting this plant the name goldenseal. Its inner bark is also used in the herbal remedies. The chemical compound berberine is anti bacterial,  therefore it is used for impetigo. Goldenseal is available in the form of a  tincture and the powder of the bark.

It is also available as a tablet which should be taken thrice a day. Goldenseal can destroy the beneficial bacteria as well, hence should not be used for longer duration. Goldenseal is also called as a poor man’s ginseng.
