Herbal Remedies For Leucoderma

Leucoderma is a type of skin condition where the skin becomes progressively depigmented and show hypo pigmented white lesions along the skin surface. Also known as vitiligo, coined by Roman physician Celsus in the second century A.D, Leucoderma has an adverse effect on the skin and generally lasts for a lifetime.

50% of Leucoderma cases appear to have its first sign before the age of 20 and sometimes, it may be caused due to a virus or an autoimmune disorder and the best way to treat this is by herbal methods. These are the most common herbal remedies for Leucoderma.

Various Herbal Remedies For Leucoderma

Ginkgo Biloba

Ginkgo Biloba is an excellent herb that can treat Leucoderma to a great extend. It is widely used across Europe and United States as an ingredient to increase blood flow in the body.

The substances antioxidant, flavonoids and terpenoids present in the Ginkgo Biloba leaf helps to prevent cell oxidation and in turn increases pigment quantity in the cells. The extract of the Ginkgo Biloba leaf contains all the active ingredients and so it should be taken orally, two times per day for twelve weeks.

Hydrastis Canadensis

Also known as Goldenseal, it is extensively found in native Canada and northeastern United States and one of the conventional herbal remedies for Leucoderma.

It contains certain isoquinoline alkaloids like hydrastine, berberine, canadine, berberastine, tetrahydroberberastine and canalidine that give it the quality to be an anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, astringent and laxative agent. Though it is very bitter in taste, it is commonly found in the form of tincture, tablet, and salve or as powder. However, despite of being an active Leucoderma remover, it may have toxic side effects.

Astragalus

Probably the most widely used herb of all time, Astragalus is found in temperate regions across the Northern Hemisphere. Also known as milk vetch and goat’s thorn, Astragalus mainly works to increase immunity of the body.

The active chemical constituent cycloastragenol enhances the immune factor that prevents auto immune disorder like Leucoderma to take over. Extracts from the astragalus root is available in the market as a supplement for treating vitiligo.

Cammiphora Wightii

Also known as Guggul resin, it is extensively found in Northern Africa and Central Asia. The resinous sap which comes out from the guggul tree is the key ingredient.

The active ingredient of this herb is the steroid called gugulsterone which acts as an antagonist to the farnesoid X-receptor, a factor which is indirectly responsible for the cause of Leucoderma. Hence, it is quite common for doctors with ayurvedic knowledge to prescribe guggul for any sort of skin damage.

Tea Tree

Last but not the least is the common herb called Melaleuca alternifolia or tea tree is one of the most effective herbal remedies for Leucoderma.

Though it takes a while to treat Leucoderma with tea tree oil and often needs to be combined with other herbs for better effect, tea tree oil has actively eradicated all sorts of lesions for various types of skin. Apply the oil to your skin or you may even add it with your bath water and wash your skin with it. However, never take it internally.
