11 Herbal Remedies For Nausea

Chamomile

Chamomile contains soothing and calming compounds that helps the muscles to relax. This alleviates vomiting and stomach pains, thereby eliminating the effects of nausea. Chamomile is available in both teas and supplements form.Chamomile teas work best when taken during the feeling of nausea. To prepare chamomile tea simply boil water and pour the boiling water over a chamomile tea bag placed inside a teacup. Let the tea steep for 10 minutes. Take small sips of the tea to relieve nausea. The flavor of the chamomile tea can be enhanced by adding honey to it.


Wild Yam To Treat Nausea In Pregnancy

Nausea is often experienced in pregnancy. The herb wild yam possesses hormonal precursors which are used by the body to make progesterone, needed to support the pregnancy. Because of the herb’s hormonal functions it treats nausea in pregnancy very effectively.

Bring four cups of water to boil. Add two tablespoons of dried wild yam to the boiling water. Let it steep for half an hour. Drink this wild yam herbal concoction one cup a day to help prevent nausea. You may even store the liquid in a jar for frequent consumption in small quantity. An herbalist may be able to suggest you a dosage depending on your severity of nausea.


Citrus Peel or Chen Pi

Citrus peel possesses warm properties. It interacts with lung and stomach functionaries and reduces the severity of vomiting and nausea. It also has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.

Take 3 to 10 grams of dried citrus peel and boil it in water. Use it as a decoction to lessen nausea. It is also available in capsules and powdered form. No side effects have been reported and the herb is meant for long term usage.


Slippery Elm to Counteract Nausea

The slippery elm contains a substance known as “mucilage”. It is a gel like substance that coats the stomach and digestive tract and prevents the acid from burning the stomach lining that causes the nausea.  Slippery elm also possesses antioxidants which reduce stomach and digestive tract inflammations eliminating any pain inside that may trigger nausea.

Slippery elm can be taken in form of tea or supplements. You can also suck on slippery elm lozenges to help relieve upset stomach and nausea. This herb is also available in liquid and powder extracts.


Spearmint

Spearmint contains menthol that helps to calm down the muscles and the digestive tract, easing nausea. The soothing aroma of the herbs relieves achy muscles and reduces body pains. The herb is available in teas, oil, gum, and candy forms.Prepare a spearmint tea by pouring boiling water over a spearmint tea bag. Let the tea steep for few minutes. Then take small sips of the herbal mint tea slowly or until the feeling of nausea is gone. Alternatively, you can suck on spearmint candies when you feel nausea. You can also take a cup of hot water and add few drops of spearmint oil to it. Then take sips of the mint flavored water slowly till the nausea is relieved. Spearmint is a safe herbal remedy for lessening vomiting and nausea. However, individuals allergic to mints should consult a herbalist before taking this herb.


Licorice Root to Treat Bacterial and Viral Infections in Stomach

Licorice possesses an active acid known as “glycyrrhizin” that teats viral and bacterial infections present inside the stomach that often causes nausea.  It coats and heals stomach ulcers and treats constipation that creates conditions of nausea in some individuals.

The best way to take licorice root is in form of tea. Licorice root tea can be prepared by pouring boiling water in licorice tea bag. It is also available in supplements and candies.


Peppermint

Peppermint has a calming effect, so it is widely used as an herbal treatment for nausea, upset stomach and anxiety.  It relaxes stomach muscles and encourages bile flow. Like spearmint, peppermint too contains menthol and relaxes the muscles.

To prepare herbal peppermint tea, take one cup of boiling water and add half cup of dried peppermint leaves to it. Let the mixture steep for ten minutes. Strain the mixture and take small sips to overcome nausea. Peppermint is also available in tincture, capsules and oil form. You can also add caraway seeds along with dried peppermint leaves to enhance the benefit of this remedy.


Oregano Acts as A muscle Relaxant

Oregano has similar benefits like peppermint. This herb has a special mention in traditional Chinese medicines to treat vomiting and nausea. You can prepare a tea by boiling dried oregano leaves or add pure oregano oil in hot water for consumption.


Ginger, an anti-inflammatory, Perennial Herb

This herb is native to India but widely used around the world to treat several ailments. It is anti-inflammatory in nature and helps to lessen stomach and body pain. The soothing sensation of the herb helps to relax stomach and alleviate nausea.Take one cup of boiling water and add 1 teaspoon of finely chopped fresh ginger root to it. Let the mixture sit for ten minutes. Stir the mixture and drink the ginger concoction to get rid of nausea. Alternatively, you can also use powdered ginger to prepare a drink. In one cup of boiling water add half teaspoon of powdered ginger. Allow it to steep for few minutes and drink. However, nothing can substitute the use of fresh ginger root for relieving nausea.


Meadowsweet sSoothes the Digestive Tract

Meadowsweet has a soothing effect on the mucous membranes of the digestive tract. It reduces acidity and alleviates nausea.
Add the dried herb to 1 cup of boiling water. Allow to steep for 10 minutes and strain the mixture. Take the herbal concoction in small sips when you are nauseas.


Fennel to Stop the Discomfort in your Stomach

 

Herbalist suggests that fennel has antimicrobial and antispasmodic properties that help to aid nausea caused due to indigestion and food poisoning. It also helps to prevent stomach contractions that elicit nausea.Add fennel seeds to one glass of water and drink. Make sure to chew the seeds well before swallowing.
