Herbal Remedies For Pain Relief

Common aches and pains can be effectively treated with certain herbs that are easily available. You normally use some of these herbs in your daily cooking. Some herbs are useful in treating more acute pains like arthritis, rheumatism and gout etc.

Herbal remedies are generally safe but in specific cases they may cause allergic reactions like skin rashes, diarrhea or stomach cramps. You should consult your physician before trying herbal remedy for pain relief.

Ginseng (Ashwagandha)

Ginseng or Ashwagandha is a popular herb in Ayurvedic medicines. It is a general health booster. It is a diuretic and it increases the flow of urine thus helps to treat water retention and joint pains. Ashwagandha powder is used to treat arthritis. It is taken in small doses with milk or honey.

 


Turmeric

Turmeric has antispasmodic properties. Its regular use helps to relieve joint pains. A pinch of turmeric powder taken with honey also relieves sore throat. Topical application of turmeric relieves painful sprains.


Kava Kava

Kava is a shrub of South Pacific region. It is used in herbal medicines to treat various health problems. Kava Kava has pain relieving properties and it is considered as useful as aspirin to treat pain. Kava Kava can be ground to make powder and it in taken is small doses with warm water to relieve pain.

 


Castor Seeds

Castor is an effective remedy for rheumatic and gout pain. Castor seeds are used as poultice to relieve swelling and pain in joints.


Celery

Celery has high sodium content. It is useful in treating arthritis, rheumatism and gout pains. Celery leaves and stem are more beneficial to treat these ailments. Extract the juice of celery leaves and stem and consume it with water to relieve pain.

 

 


Garlic

Garlic contains anti oxidants. It has sulphur and anti inflammatory properties. It is extensively used to treat rheumatism, arthritis and lumbago pain. Garlic can be taken in form of fresh cloves, in form of juice and in form of garlic pearls that are available in the market. You should not take more than 2-3 garlic cloves at a time as it may cause stomach inflammation or skin rashes in some people.


Vasaka

Vasaka is indigenous to India, it is also called Malabar Nut tree. It is used to treat pain in throat and chest that occurs due to throat infection. The leaves, roots and flowers of Vasaka are used as herbal remedy to treat these ailments. The extract of Vasaka roots is mixed in cough syrup and a decoction made with the leaves is used to relieve throat pain.

 


Indian Aloe

Indian Aloe has smooth green fleshy leaves. The leaves contain medicinal properties and the pulp of leaves is useful in treating lumbago, sciatica and rheumatic pain. You should eat the pulp of one leaf daily to treat pain.


Dry Ginger (saunth)

Dry ginger is obtained from drying fresh ginger and its medicinal properties are multiplied manifold. Dry ginger is used in powder form to treat arthritis, rheumatic, gout and joint pain.

It is a powerful remedy to treat sore throat and body ache that occurs due to high fever. Its anti viral and anti spasmodic properties make it a very effective herb to treat pain. Dry ginger powder can be taken with honey or in form of decoction.

Prepare a mixture by mixing turmeric powder, fenugreek powder and dry ginger powder in equal quantities and eat ½ tea spoon of this mixture with your meals.


Arnica

Arnica is used for topical application to relieve pain. It is gaining immense popularity due to its anti-inflammatory properties. It should not be taken internally as it might cause irritation. Arnica is available in form of gel, ointment and it is mixed in pain relieving herbal oils.


Clove Oil

Clove oil is used to treat tooth pain and cavity formation. It has pain relieving properties and it should be applied in little quantity on the affected areas.

 

 


Oregano

Oregano is a common herb that is mostly used for culinary purpose. It is analgesic, anti inflammatory and antispasmodic. You can sprinkle a tea spoon of oregano on your salad, soup or vegetables to enhance the taste as well as to treat pain.


Ajwain

Ajwain seeds are stimulant and they contain antispasmodic properties. It is a highly valued herb in Ayurvedic medicine. Heat Ajwain seeds to smoking point and sniff it frequently to relieve migraine. To treat arthritis and rheumatic pain oil extracted from Ajwain seeds should be applied regularly on affected areas.


Chamomile

Chamomile belongs to the sun flower family. It is anti inflammatory and stress relieving herb. It relieves muscle tension and stiffness in the joints. It is also used to relieve arthritis and rheumatic pain.

Chamomile is taken as tea for pain relief. To make chamomile tea, boil 1 tea spoon of dried chamomile flowers in water. Strain the tea and drink it two times a day.


Green Cardamom

Green cardamom is a fragrant herb. It is used as a mouth freshener but its medicinal properties do not end here. Green cardamom is useful in treating headache and abdominal cramps.

To treat headache apply the paste of green cardamom on your forehead.
For abdominal cramps, grind two green cardamoms to make powder, add honey and eat the paste twice a day.


Cinnamon

Cinnamon is a common herb that is frequently used for culinary purposes. It has immense medicinal value. It is useful in treating stomach ache caused by gas and constipation. It also cures headache.

For stomach pain, mix together ¼ tea spoon each of asafoetida and cinnamon powder. Boil the mixture in one glass of water and drink it three times a day when cool. Apply a paste of cinnamon on the temples to treat migraine.


Asafoetida

Asafoetida is a common herb that is regularly used in Indian cuisine. It has pain relieving qualities and it helps to relieve stomach ache, headache and tooth ache. It helps to relieve gas and constipation.

Add a pinch of asafoetida powder in your daily meals to prevent gas formation and stomach ache. For headache, dissolve asafoetida in water and inhale the aroma. It will relieve tension headache instantly.
