6 Herbal Remedies For Epilepsy

Valerian

Valerian is one of the most popular herbs for the treatment for epilepsy. It is anti-convulsant and the main constituents of this herb are acetic acid, ascorbic acid, beta-ionone, caffeic acid, manganese, quercitin and valeric acid.

It can be taken in the form of tea, capsules or used as an extract .However, a large amount of this herb may lead to stomach upsets.


Chinese Ginseng

The main constituents of this herb eleutherosides B and E and immune stimulant complex polysaccharides. This is the best medicinal plant of China. The dried root of ginseng can be taken in the form of capsules, tincture or tea.


Motherwort

Motherwort contains alkaloids which are very effective for the treatment of epilepsy. It is used as a nerve tonic and sedative. You can take this herb in the form of tea, capsule or extract.

Honey or other sweetening agents can be added to make it sweet as it tastes bitter. This herb is not recommended in pregnancy till the eighth month as it stimulates the contractions of the uterine.


Sage

Sage is considered as a miracle herb as one of the constituent of this herb known as Salvia militiorrhiza helps to cure the problem of epilepsy. It overcomes the problem of side effects of Valium. Valium is benzodiazepine which is prescribed for the treatment of epilepsy. Sage can be used in fresh or dried form. It is a culinary as well as medicinal herb that can be taken in tea or extract form. Sage oil is also available but it is not used for the treatment of epilepsy.


Black Cohosh

It is one of the most recommended herbs for the treatment of many diseases including epilepsy. It is a sedative and antispasmodic which helps to treat epilepsy.

The tea made by boiling the roots of black cohosh is very effective. You can also take it in the form of extract or capsules that are available in health stores.


Scullcap

The main components of this herb are ascorbic-acid, magnesium, potassium,scutellarin ,tannin and zinc and all these components are safe and mild nervine.This herb is used for the treatment of St.Vitus dance, convulsions ,epilepsy and seizures since long time. Most of the time it is taken as a tea or tincture but it is available in the form of supplements also. The best way to use them is to make a tincture of this herb
