Water retention that state of the body in which the fluid in the circulatory system gets assembled in the body tissues or cavities. Our body contains 70 % of water and water is a part of all the body organs and muscles. This situation is also called by the name edema. The water level in the body is regulated by the hormones and prostaglandins. When the water is in excess then the kidneys will excrete more urine than normal and when there is deficiency of body fluids then the urine flow will be less than the normal

Mostly the problem of water retention is observed in pregnant women, patients of heart and liver disease or at the time of menstruation etc. Several types of diuretics are used to galvanize the kidneys to increase the amount of water. But these diuretics may have some side effects so you can go for herbal remedies. Medical advice should be sought before taking these herbs.

Herbal Remedies For Water Retention

Dandelion Roots

The herb dandelion is a perennial herb which acts as a diuretic.It instigates the kidney to excrete more water. This herb works like the drug furosemide that is being widely used for the treatment of water retention. The diuretics reduces the potassium content in the body and this herb overcomes this problem as the dandelion is a rich source of potassium. You can take this herb in the form of tea or tincture. The tea can easily be made by boiling the roots of the dandelion in water. The leaves of dandelion herb can also be used. The herb dandelion contains lactones, triterpenes, sterols, polysaccharides and insulin.

Butcher’s Broom

Butcher’s broom herb is the native herb of European countries. The active ingredients of this herb are alkanoids, flavonoids, glycosides and some amount of amino acids and volatile oils in it. These ingredients help in the water retention process of the body. This herb is equally effective for regulating the heartbeat and heart diseases. You can take this herb in the form of tea or tincture. However this herb is not recommended for pregnant women and the patients suffering from the problem of hypertension.

Linden

Linden herb has antioxidant properties and the components of this herb are flavonoids and mucilage and some amount of volatile oils. This herb will solve the problem of water retention if it is due to hypertension or menstrual cycle. This herb is not recommended if you are taking other diuretics or the hypertension medication. You can take this herb in the form of tea, capsules or tincture.

Bearberry

Bearberry herb contains arbutin, tannins and triterpenes and has antimocrobial properties which help to cure the problem of water retention. This herb increases the frequency of urine clearly indicating that the problem of water retention is solved. This herb can be taken in the form of dried powder, capsules and as a tincture. However, the use of this herb should not continue for more than a week and medical advice should be sought for the dosage instruction.

Parsley

The herb parsley can be grown easily in our garden at home. This herb is widely used in cooking and preparations of many herbal medicines. It contains flavonoids and essential oil which helps the kidneys to excrete more water. You can take this herb in the form of tea , tincture and raw as a garnishing for your salads and vegetables. However this herb is not advised for long durations for pregnant women.
