Coughing always makes you weak because it puts a lot of stress and strain on your chest and lungs. Cough can be both dry cough and wet cough. Wet cough or productive cough, is when your chest feels congested and you also have the feeling of breathlessness. A wet cough will bring up mucus and phlegm when you cough.

Wet cough can be caused due to bronchitis or even as the last symptom of the common cold and flu after a sore throat or sinus congestion. Antibiotics are available in the market to treat wet cough but these are usually strong and have side effects. Thyme

This herb is very effective to treat wet cough because of its expectorant properties. Thyme works as a strong expectorant and brings out the phlegm, thus removing the chest congestion, clearing the respiratory tract and curing wet cough problem.

To make thyme tea, take two tablespoon of fresh thyme and put it in a cup of ho water. Allow it to seep for a while and drain out. Add two teaspoon of honey to it, mix well and drink the tea twice daily.


Marshmallow Tea

Marshmallow helps to reduce wet cough by thinning the mucus and so every time you cough, the phlegm is released because of it being thinned. This helps to cough out the mucus and curing wet cough.

Marshmallow when mixed with water, releases viscous mucilage that acts as a soothing throat coat and thins the mucus. To make the tea, simmer two teaspoons of dried marshmallow herb in a cup of hot water, strain and drink it three times daily.


Licorice

This herb is also very effective to cure wet cough. Licorice has antibiotic properties and acts on the infection by loosing the phlegm and thus it helps to spurt out the mucus when you cough. This lightens the chest congestion.

Additionally it also relaxes bronchial spasms, thereby reducing wet cough, the chest congestion and the chest discomfort. You can add forty five drops of licorice tincture to a cup of hot water. Sip the solution slowly twice daily to get positive results.

Horehound

This is a bitter herb and it helps to reduce the wet cough by acting as an irritant to trigger the cough which brings out the phlegm. Horehound leaves or flowers thus acts as an expectorant and treats wet cough effectively. You can make a tea from the horehound leaves to treat wet cough.

To make the tea, take one cup of boiling water and add two teaspoons of dried horehound leaves of flowers. Let it infuse for about thirty minutes and then strain and drink. Drink this tea twice daily to get good results.


Eucalyptus

Tea made from eucalyptus is a very popular cure for wet cough. Eucalyptus has antiseptic, expectorant, cooling and soothing properties which treats wet cough by treating both bronchitis and common cold. Eucalyptus tea acts on the chest congestion by making the mucus thin and spurting it out and having antiseptic properties, it also treats the chest infection directly.

Prepare a cup of eucalyptus tea take a cup of water, add four or five eucalyptus leaves and boil it. Once boiled, drain the tea and sip it slowly. Take three to four cups daily and while you drink also inhale the vapours to get relief from the cold.
