5 Herbs For Hoarseness

Hoarseness is also called as “dysphonia” in medical terms. Inflammation of the Larynx or the vocal cord is the main reason behind Hoarseness. Other than this, injury to the vocal cords, thyroid problems, allergies, irritation caused by excessive screaming or smoking can also lead to hoarseness.

Hoarseness gives the voice a harsh and raspy quality. It may also change the volume or pitch of the voice. Hoarseness is a common symptom that most people experience while fighting cold and flu. Many causes of Hoarseness and mild soaring of the throat can be treated by resting the voice and with the use of natural herbs.


Various Herbs For Hoarseness

Ginger

Ginger is the rhizome of the plant Zingiber officinale and mainly consumed as a medicine and spice. It is used in curing of a variety of diseases naturally because of its anti-inflammatory property. Ginger can be effectively used in treating Hoarseness. Take a tiny ginger root and peel the skin.

Make thin slices of this root and place them into a small pot of water. Boil the water and when the tea turns into straw color, add three tablespoons of honey to sweeten the tea and sip the tea slowly. This tea when swallowed gives a sharp tingle to the throat. This tea helps in getting voice back and thus prevents the hoarseness.


Onion And Cayenne Pepper

Take about three onions, make small slices and put them into four cups of water. Simmer this until it becomes syrupy. Strain into a glass of warm water, add a tablespoon of honey, a dash of lemon and sip it slowly.

Cayenne Pepper tea is also very much beneficial in curing Hoarseness. Take about 1glass of boiling water. Add few lemon juice drops and about the ¼ teaspoon of Cayenne pepper. Stir the solution well and sip it slowly. This hot solution is very much effective in treating a hoarseness.


Peppermint

Mint is a Perennial herb with curative properties. Peppermint eases hoarseness and soothes sore throat by reducing the pain, calming the irritation and itchiness. Squeeze a large bunch of leaves of peppermint into a ½ cup of honey and consume 1teaspoon of this mixture, every hour.

Alternatively, herbal tea made from steep peppermint, stem or leaves are also very soothing. Dry the peppermint leaves in direct sunlight. After the leaves turn crunchy, boil some water and add about two tablespoons of dried peppermint leaves. Cover and seep for twenty minutes. Strain into a coffee mug, add honey and lime. Sip this hot tea several times a day to get instant relief from hoarseness.


Marshmallow And Chamomile

Marshmallow (Althaea officinalis) plant root and leaves are used to make medicine. This is very rich in mucilage. Marshmallow root powder is added to a cup of boiling water. Steep it covered for 90 minutes before straining.

Gargle with this water 2-3 times a day. A Chamomile flower is known for its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory property. Add a tablespoon of Chamomile dried flower into a cup of boiling water. Allow it to steep for about 10 minutes. Gargle with this water twice a day to get cured from hoarseness.


Eucalyptus Leaves And Fenugreek Seeds

Boil some Fenugreek seeds and eucalyptus leaves to prepare a concoction. Gargle with this solution 4 to 5 times in a day to get relieved from hoarseness.

Antibacterial property of Eucalyptus leaves helps in soothing the inflammation. Fenugreek seed is well recognized for its medicinal and culinary property. The anti-inflammatory property of fenugreek seed helps in curing hoarseness faster.
