If you notice that your skin’s natural color is darkening then the condition is known as pigmentation. But in extreme cases when the skin starts producing excess melanin and there are dark skin patches, the condition is called hyperpigmentation.
Caused by sun damage or even health disorders, hyperpigmentation can also indicated medical conditions where a professional treatment is required. But in cases where the situation is not extreme then one can also resort to a few home remedies that can counteract the effects of hyperpigmentation.
Hyperpigmentation Home Remedies
We are all exposed to the ultra-violet rays of the sun on a daily basis. These can lead to pigmentation that can be handled with regular usage of over-the-counter sunscreen lotions. But in case you note extreme pigmented patches then opt for the following remedies that are safe and effective.
Aloe Vera
Considered one of the best skin treatment plants, aloe vera gel extracted from the plant can be applied on a daily basis to the affected skin.
Tea Tree Oil and Olive Oil
A mixture of olive oil and tea tree oil can be applied on a regular basis to treat hyperpigmentation. To make this mixture, use a tablespoon of tea tree oil and 2 tablespoon of olive oil and mix the two. Use the mixed oils to massage onto the affected area. Next, leave it to dry and then wash it off with a mild soap. One can store the oil mixture in a cool and dark place for a maximum period of a month.
Lemon Juice
Containing high levels of citric acid, lemon juice is a great remedy for damaged skin layers. For application, just squeeze a lemon and extract the juice.
Dab a cotton ball into the juice and apply it on the pigmented area. This can be done on a daily basis at least twice and within a month one can notice the difference in the skin.
Onion
If you notice signs of hyperpigmentation, rush to the kitchen and grab an onion. Slice it and apply the red onion to the exposed skin. The peeling extract of the onion encourages skin turnover that helps in reducing the skin damage that has occurred due to pigmentation.
Honey and Apple Cider Vinegar
Another hyperpigmentation treatment solution that works wonders on the skin is a mixture of honey and apple cider vinegar. To make this mixture, combine a tablespoon of honey with ½ tablespoon of apple cider vinegar.
Mix it well and massage onto the affected area and leave it on for approximately 20 minutes. Rinse it off with cool water and a mild cleanser.
Castor Oil
Due to pigmentation, the skin can become rough. In such cases, application of castor oil is a great remedy. Gently dab a cotton ball in castor oil and apply on the affected area. After application, cover the area with a bandage allowing the skin to soak in the oil.
Eucalyptus Essential Oil and Jojoba Oil
Oil mixtures are a great remedy for pigmentation. One can mix eucalyptus oil and jojoba oil to get rid of hyperpigmentation spots on the face.
To make the mixture, combine half teaspoon of eucalyptus oil with 4 teaspoon of jojoba oil. Mix it properly and then use it as a massaging oil to apply on the affected area. Leave it on for approximately 30 minutes before washing it off with a mild cleanser. This can be repeated on a daily basis.
