On an average, an individual blinks approximately 15,000 times per day. What makes an individual blink more is the exposure to dust and other allergens.
Additionally, less sleep, tears, or water retention problems can also cause red and puffy eyes. The condition is very common among adults and children who are exposed to such conditions on a daily basis.

Home Remedies for Red Eyes
Though red eyes can go away with time and proper rest, there are innumerable simple red eye home remedies that can help fasten the going away process.
Cucumber or Potato
The simplest remedy is to make a mixture of cucumber and potato. To make the mixture, chop and blend raw potato and cucumber. Strain the juice and extract the pulp.
Mix basil tea into the mixture, pour this mixture into an ice tray, and place it in a freezer. Once the ice cubes are made, use it on the red eyes. Rinse off thoroughly after it melts and pat dry.
Tea Bags
Another effective home remedy for red eyes is to use tea bags over the red eyes. Tea is made of tannins that works as a natural astringent that helps in tightening the skin around the eye while removing the redness of the eyes.
Tea bags also help in reducing inflammation around the eyes. While using tea bags make sure that it is cooled in a refrigerator before using. Also, do not apply directly onto the eyes but wrap it around the eyes to avoid discoloration of the skin.
Eye Massage
If and when you notice redness of the eyes, simply massage the area around the eyes. Gently massaging can stimulate the lymphatic system and improves the blood circulation that gently reduces the chances of redness. For best results, gently massage with your middle finger, applying pressure on the eye socket and the brows.
Cold Compresses
To eliminate redness of the eye, one can also use cold compresses. Use water with ice cubes for the compress. Dip a clean cloth onto the cold water and let it rest on and around the eyes for around five minutes.
Repeat the process till the redness fades away. In case, the redness persists then refrigerate a metal spoon and compress the eye sockets with the rounded side of the spoon.
Reduce Sodium Intake
If redness of the eye is a common occurrence, then reduce the consumption of sodium. That is, decrease food items such as chips, pickles, and processed food. These items makes the eyes puffy and red so avoiding will decrease the red eye occurrence.
Diuretic Vegetables
Increase consumption of diuretic vegetables including parsley, asparagus, and spinach. These along with regular water consumption can flush out excess salt off the body; thus, reducing the chances of red eye occurrences.
Sleeping Posture
Red eyes can be caused due to the bad sleeping posture. Hence, check into that. Also, one can elevate the head before sleeping by using additional pillows. This exercise will help in triggering better water drainage under the eye. In short, sleep on your back instead of the stomach and this will eliminate red eye problems.
