When we say Rheumatism, we don’t refer to a single ailment, but a number of diseases come under this term. When a person is suffering from constant pain and inflammation of muscles and joints, he or she could be afflicted by any of the rheumatic disorders.
In severe cases, it can lead to destruction of joints and pains, causing severe pain as well as disability. It is generally found that older people, especially older women are more prone to have this problem of aching joints and muscles. You can try the home remedies listed below to get some relief from rheumatism.
Various Remedies For Rheumatism
Massage With Ajwain Oil
Ajwain or carom seeds are a common Indian spice and ajwain oil is obtained from these. Massaging the affected part with ajwain oil helps reduce inflammation of sore joints and muscles, which reduces the pain associated with this problem. Try massaging before going to bed. The warmth of your covers will enhance the therapeutic effect of the oil.
Chloroform And Rubbing Alcohol Mixture
You can get relief from rheumatism by applying a mix of wintergreen oil, chloroform & rubbing alcohol, which are mixed together in the ratio 1:3:12. You could experience a slight burning sensation, but it will diminish gradually.
However, be careful if you have any wounds or scars in the area having rheumatic pain. Avoid the injured part when applying this mix. This is a very good compress for rheumatic pains.
Hot Baths
It is important to keep the affected area warm. So, you can try taking hot baths for 15 minutes every day. Adding some Epsom salt to your bath water is also good to relieve aching muscles.
To increase the warmth to the affected area, you can even try a heating pad or a blanket. There are some herbal packs available, which you can heat in the microwave and use as a compress.
Cold Compress
A cold compress will also help you when your joints are swollen causing pain and discomfort. An ice pack is the best way to get a cold treatment for your rheumatic pain.
It is advisable to restrict cold compresses to less than fifteen minutes at a time. A break of half an hour is sufficient before you repeat it. Alternating hot and cold compresses is also good.
Sesame Oil Infused With Camphor
Dissolve some camphor in olive oil. You can warm this camphor infused sesame oil and massage the area that is swollen or hurting because of rheumatism.
Sesame oil is among the best oils used for massage and camphor acts as a mild anesthetic, providing a cooling sensation and pain relief when applied on the areas which are painful.
Castor Oil Plant Leaf
If you can find a castor oil plant, tear a leaf from it and keep it firmly on the affected area for some time. This is also an effective way of getting relief from rheumatic pain.
Castor oil also has a warming effect when massaged on the paining joints, but it is very thick in consistency and you may need some force to spread it well, which could cause the pain to increase. So, tying a leaf is a better option.
