10 Home Remedies For Sinus Headache

Characterized by pain around the eyes and behind the cheekbones, sinus headaches occur when there is a swelling of the sinus membranes. It can be caused by allergies or bad cold or infection in the upper respiratory tract but sinus headaches can be painful and very uncomfortable for the patient.  

Treatment is possible through simple home remedies that can help reduce the pain and also eliminate most of the symptoms in time.

To treat sinus headaches, one must treat the inflammation that causes it. If you prefer home treatments for sinus headaches, then check the following list of solutions that will make the pain bearable.

Warm Compresses

In most cases, sinus can be caused by cold and nasal congestion. Hence, to treat sinus one must treat the nasal congestion and the cold and one can do so by applying warm compress onto the forehead and eyes. Leave the cloth onto the area for some time and repeat the routine till the headache subsides.


Steam

One can also treat sinus by unclogging the nasal congestion by inhaling steam. To do so, the best way to do so is to take a hot shower or inhale warm water mixed with eucalyptus oil.


Eucalyptus Oil

 

One can also take approximately 200mg of eucalyptus oil divided into three parts on a daily basis to treat sinus headaches. This reduces the nasal congestion and drain sinuses.


Liquids

Treatment of sinus is also possible if you can increase the consumption of liquids. Beverages such as fruit juices and water are a great option but avoid having caffeinated drinks and alcohol. If hot drink is your choice then one can have herbal tea made from fennel.


Pineapple

Having fresh pineapple after every meal can also help in treatment of sinus headaches effectively. Containing an enzyme called bromelain, pineapple reduces the inflammation and helps in eliminating the headache effectively.


Elevation

When suffering from an episode of sinus headaches, elevate the bed while sleeping. This new position helps in draining out the mucus from the sinus passageway. If you cannot elevate the bed then use some extra pillows to prop your head while lying down or one can also sleep in a recliner.


Yogurt

Treatment of sinus headaches is also possible with yogurt containing friendly bacteria called probiotic lactobacillus. The bacteria contained yogurt helps in reducing allergies that can trigger sinus headaches.


Humidifier

Use a humidifier while sleeping as this reduces the pressure and helps in the breathing process. Water vapor from the humidifier also loosens the mucus which moistens the nasal passage and reduces the swelling.


Soups

Opt for vegetable soups that help in treating the cold and nasal congestion by thinning the mucus, one of the most common causes of sinus headaches.


Spicy Foods

Effective treatment of sinus headaches is also possible with consumption of spicy food. Hence, include hot spicy sauce or cayenne pepper or horseradish into your daily meals if you suffer from frequent episodes of sinus headaches. The hotness in the spicy food helps in eliminating the mucus and helps in recovering normal breathing.
