Tonsillitis is a condition where tonsils (the area on the back of the throat along its wall) get swollen and become painful because of bacterial or viral infection. Depending upon the severity of the condition, the treatment may vary significantly from just taking over-the-counter medications to even surgery.
However, there are lots of natural remedies also available out there. Following is a brief rundown on some of the proven ways to cure tonsillitis naturally.
Mix a pinch of salt in one glass of warm water and gargle with it. This is one of the simplest yet very effective natural treatments for tonsillitis. Alternatively, you can mix one tsp. of apple cider vinegar in one cup of warm water. Just 30-60 seconds of gargling will bring great relief to you. Do it at least 4-5 times a day.
After gargling, you are also advised to drink one cup of water with lemon juice mixed in it. This will further remove the infections from your tonsils and throat. You can also consider gargling with sage tea. Sage contains antimicrobial elements called tannins, which can be very beneficial in disinfecting your tonsils.
There are more than ten natural antiseptic ingredients in honeysuckle flowers that can treat tonsillitis infections quite effectively. You can mix honeysuckle flowers or leaves in hot lemonade, or alternatively, you can prepare honeysuckle tea.
Eating small pieces of garlic and onion cloves is another proven way to treat tonsillitis naturally. Garlic is also available in the form of capsules in health food stores, but you are recommended to chew the actual garlic clove for faster and more beneficial results.
Drinking onion or garlic soup is another good alternative. You can even consider mixing other spicy herbs like horseradish and peppers in the soup to increase its overall effectiveness.
Echinacea is a powerful herb that has been found to be very beneficial in treating tonsil infections. The natural ingredients that Echinacea contains stimulate white blood cells in your body and prepare it to fight against viral and bacterial infections with more strength. You can clear up your tonsillitis infections by gargling with Echinacea root tincture a couple of times daily. Alternatively, just drinking a cup of Echinacea tea several times a day can also be as effective.
Avoid talking too much when you have tonsillitis. The more you keep your throat at rest, the faster will be the recovery. You are also advised to keep your voice low when talking. But, that does not mean you should whisper. Whispering puts more pressure on your tonsils.
This way, there will be more moisture in the air and it will become much easier for you to swallow and breathe.
Citrus fruits like watercress, guavas, red pepper, bell peppers and bananas are very high in vitamin C and so can be particularly very effective in disinfecting your tonsils. Eat lots of these fruits to cure tonsillitis.Last, but not the least, you must also avoid drinking anything cold, be it cold water, soft drinks or just anything.
