Constipation is also referred to as “Costiveness’’ and “Dyschezia’’. The problem of constipation in adults is caused by the intake of certain medicines, excessive consumption of alcohol and caffeinated products, lack of fibrous diet, abdominal hernia and gallstones.

Symptoms of this problem include infrequent bowel movements, nausea, vomiting, inability to pass gas, bad breath, bad taste in the mouth and headache. Different natural cures can be used to treat the problem of constipation in adults.


Natural Cures for Constipation in Adults

Juice

Prune juice is an effective natural cure for treating the problem. Intake of a glass of prune juice several times in a day can provide relief. Prune juice can also be mixed with apple juice to increase its effectiveness.

A cup of warm water containing lemon juice can also be consumed. Drinking a mixture of orange juice and olive oil on a frequent basis may also relieve the problem.


Castor Oil

Castor oil can stimulate the walls of small and large intestines which may help in reducing the difficulty in bowel movements. Castor oil (2 tablespoons) can be added to warm milk (1 cup) and consumed to cure various symptoms associated with the problem. This oil is not recommended for pregnant women.


Diet

Fibrous food items can relieve the problem within a reasonable period of time. Consumption of a diet containing 20 to 30 grams of fiber on a daily basis can reduce the problem. Fiber is found in food items such as pear, fig, spinach, sweet potato and bran cereals.


Exercise

Exercise can improve the digestive health and cure various symptoms associated with the problem. An individual can go for a brisk walk on a regular basis. Running, swimming and cycling can also provide the desired results. These exercises should be performed for 30 to 40 minutes.


Psyllium Husk

Use of psyllium husk can provide relief from the problem of irregular bowel movements. Psyllium husk (1 teaspoon) can be mixed in a glass of water and consumed multiple times in a day to treat the problem.


Dried Fruits

Intake of dried fruits can treat irregular bowel movements. Consumption of raisins, apricots and dried plum can relieve the problem. An individual can consume raisins soaked in water for 6 to 8 hours to obtain the desired results.


Olive Oil

Olive oil can also be used in the treatment of constipation. Intake of virgin olive oil (1 tablespoon) empty stomach every day can reduce the problem. Food items prepared with olive oil can also be consumed on a daily basis to obtain effective results.


Tea

Chamomile flowers can be boiled in water to prepare a cup of tea and consumed on a frequent basis to relieve the problem. Intake of tea prepared with the use of ginger root, yellow dock and licorice can also give the desired results.


Bael Fruit

Consumption of bael fruit (50 to 60 grams) before dinner can also help in the treatment. A drink can also be prepared with the use of ripe bael fruit and consumed on a daily basis for a period of 2 to 3 months to obtain good results.
