The problem of hiatal hernia is referred to as “Hiatus Hernia’’. “Sliding Hernia’’ and “Paraesophageal Hernia’’ are the two main types of hiatal hernia. It is common among people over the age of 50 years. Weakening of the supporting tissues, obesity, lifting heavy objects, smoking, increased pressure on the abdomen due to frequent coughing, sneezing, vomiting and pregnancy and stress might result in the problem.Symptoms of the problem include heartburn, chest pain, indigestion, inflammation in the stomach and esophagus. The problem may also result in acid reflux, difficulty in swallowing food and shortness of breath. Use of below mentioned natural cures can be helpful in the treatment of hiatal hernia.

Natural Cures for Hiatal Hernia

1. Orange Peel

Intake of orange peel extract on a frequent basis can reduce the heartburn resulting from the problem. A mixture prepared by adding orange peel and cardamom tincture in water can also be consumed on a regular basis to obtain the desired results.

2. Vitamins

Vitamins can help in improving the digestion and preventing the growth of the problem. To obtain the desired results, food items rich in vitamin A, B, C or E can be consumed as a part of the daily diet. Whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables and milk are some sources of these vitamins.

3. Marshmallow Root

Marshmallow root can be used as a natural remedy. It contains mucilage which can form a protective layer on the lining of the stomach and esophagus. A cup of tea prepared by steeping marshmallow root in water can be consumed several times in a day to relieve various symptoms associated with the problem. Pregnant women should not use this natural cure.

4. Exercise or Yoga

Exercise or yoga can strengthen diaphragm and stomach and prevent the growth of hiatal hernia. An individual suffering from the problem can lay down on the bed and place one pillow under his/her head and another under his/her knees and practice breathing exercises to relieve the pain and discomfort caused by the problem. Different yoga postures such as vrksasana, baddhakonasana, marichyasana and supta padangusthasana can provide relief from the symptoms.

5. Aloe Vera

Aloe vera may provide effective results in the treatment of hiatal hernia. Drinking aloe vera juice before each meal can improve the digestion and reduce the abdominal pressure which may lead to the problem. Further, daily consumption of aloe vera juice can help in reducing the discomfort associated with hiatal hernia.

6. Evening Primrose Oil

Evening primrose oil is another natural cure. It contains essential fatty acids which can decrease the indigestion and inflammation in the stomach and esophagus resulting from the problem.

7. Honey

Honey can also be used in the treatment of the problem. Intake of honey (1 tablespoon) mixed in a glass of warm water/milk on a frequent basis can provide relief from the problem. Further, it can help in repairing the damaged tissues and preventing the growth of infections resulting from the problem. To obtain the desired results, an individual can also add honey (1 teaspoon) to a cup of green or chamomile tea.
