Natural Treatments For Diarrhea

Share

Generally diarrhea does not pose serious problems for adults, though it may become a threat to life if the care is not taken in the initial stages especially for children. Even in case of adults it surely calls for attention, if it becomes chronic. Diarrhea occurs because of stomach infection.

Stomach flu caused by either a bacteria or virus is generally responsible for the onset of frequent watery stools. It may be accompanied by cramps, gas and nausea. To battle diarrhea successfully, natural treatments come handy and in case of a mild diarrhea one need not even go to a doctor.

Effective Natural Treatments For Diarrhea

Drink Fluids For Diarrhea

Intake of fluids is vital in the treatment of diarrhea. In fact this is the first treatment that should come to your mind upon being afflicted with diarrhea. Excessive bowel movements result in the loss of body fluids and this condition can fast deteriorate the health, so better stay hydrated. You can take soups and juices in addition to plain water.

Along with the watery stools there is a loss of not only water, but also of important minerals. To replace the lost minerals one can buy electrolyte pouches of oral re-hydration powder which should be mixed with plain and boiled water as per the instructions. This liquid should be taken frequently. It keeps the minerals at the optimum level.

Eat Yogurt (curd) For Diarrhea

The curd that you eat will produce lactic acid in your digestive system. The lactic acid kills the rogue bacteria which are responsible for causing diarrhea. The probiotic yogurt is widely available and is very beneficial for increasing the numbers of healthy bacteria in your digestive tract. Buy probiotic yogurt and keep it in your fridge when you have diarrhea.

Eat Bananas For Diarrhea

Bananas get digested easily and are also great antacids. Because of this property they can nullify the effect of acid in the stomach and the stomach feels relaxed and soothed. Bananas are rich sources of potassium which can help maintain level of water in the body. They contain a soluble fiber which helps regulate bowels.

Drink Tea For Diarrhea

Chamomile tea is a flavorful herb. It reduces the inflammation of the intestines and calms the spasmodic pains which often accompany diarrhea. A tsp of chamomile can be steeped in a glass of water and brought to a boil for 2 minutes. You may add some honey and sip this lukewarm tea.

Mint tea is another helpful tea which soothes the gastrointestinal system and keeps the muscles of your digestive tract relaxed, hence this tea keeps the stomach spasms at bay. For a day’s consumption you can take two glasses of water and boil 10 to 15 medium sized twigs of mint. Let it simmer for 5 minutes, cool it down, add some sugar and drink it in 3 to 4 doses.

Eat Low Fiber Light Food

Overcooked rice is a preferred diet for the diarrhea patient. If the stools are very frequent and loose, its best to take just the water of extra cooked rice. It is best to combine this rice water with some curd and a bit of salt. Your perfect diet  to treat diarrhea is ready. High fiber foods put strain on the digestive system because they are difficult to digest.

Take Psyllium For Diarrhea

Psyllium makes the stool hard by absorbing excessive water from the intestines. It has a high fiber content, but it is a soluble fiber which does not put strain on the digestive system. It is perfectly safe to take two tbsp of this husk. Psyllium helps in treating mild cases of diarrhea.

Eat Starchy Foods

Starch laden foods are the best to cure diarrhea. But it could be a gross mistake if you thought that you could eat those french fries, cutlets and crispy wafers. They are not a treatment for diarrhea patients. Instead, you will have to go for just plain boiled potatoes without even the salt.

Orange Peel Tea

It may not sound convincing, but it does help alleviating the symptoms of diarrhea. Wash the orange peel thoroughly, Boil the peel of one orange in a glass of water. Let it cool down, you can take it plain or add honey and consume it. You can also put sugar instead of honey.

Take Fenugreek Seeds

This remedy is for adults, do not give it to children. All you have to do is to take half a tsp of fenugreek seeds. Soak them in water for a few hours. Eat these seeds and drink the water in which they had been soaked. Alternatively grind these seeds and take this  powder with a glass of water to alleviate the symptoms of diarrhea.
