7 Treatments For Edema

Edema is also referred to as “Dropsy’’ and “Hydrops’’. This problem is characterized by swelling. Skin infection, pregnancy, allergic reaction, blood clot in the veins of the legs, heart disease, ascites, hydrocephalus, kidney disease and cirrhosis can also result in the problem of edema.

Symptoms of this problem may include increased abdominal size, chest pain and shortness of breath. Various natural treatments can be used for curing the medical condition.


Natural Treatments for Edema

Oil Therapy

Frequent massage with warm mustard oil can relieve the swelling. The therapeutic properties of tea tree oil can treat the problem within a reasonable period of time. Application of flaxseed oil on the affected area can also help in the treatment of edema.

Geranium and carrier oil can be diluted with warm water and poured on the swollen areas. A person can also rub cypress and juniper berry oil directly on the affected area or add these oils in water to be used for bathing purposes.


Cold Water

A person can soak his/her feet in a tub containing water and ice cubes to get instant relief from the swelling resulting from fluid retention.


Exercise

Regular exercise can help in increasing the blood circulation and protecting the body from edema. A person can lie down on the bed and elevate his/her legs multiple times in a day to get relief.

Another alternative is to place some pillows under the knees or ankles before sleeping.


Reduce Salt Consumption

Excessive consumption of salt can increase the risk of fluid buildup in the body. A person suffering from edema should reduce the intake of salty food items to treat various symptoms associated with the problem.


Tea

Tea prepared by boiling dried dandelion leaf can be consumed several times in a day to relieve the swelling. Regular intake of a cup of tea made with bilberry and grape seed extract can also provide relief. The diuretic properties of parsley tea can also help in the treatment of the problem.

A cup of parsley tea should be consumed before breakfast in the morning. A person can soak his/her feet in a solution made with the use of burdock leaf tea to get effective results. A solution prepared by mixing arnica tea and water can also be used.


Lemon

Lemon has diuretic properties. A lemon can be squeezed in a glass of warm water and consumed in the morning on a regular basis to flush out excess fluid from the body. The swollen ankles can be treated with the intake of a mixture of lemon juice and baking soda. Application of lemon oil on the affected area can also help in reducing the swelling.


Ginger

Ginger has anti-inflammatory properties. Ginger powder (half teaspoon) can be mixed with warm water and consumed on a frequent basis to cure the problem of edema.

Consumption of a mixture of ginger juice and green tea can also provide the desired results. A person can use ginger oil to massage the affected area on a regular basis to get relief from the swelling.
