Itchy scalp can be very annoying and irritating. Itchy scalp can be caused due to dandruff, head lice or lack of proper hair care. People with this condition try to treat it with medicated hair products, but they only provide temporary relief.

You have to go to the root cause of itchy scalp and then treat it naturally for a permanent solution.

Natural Treatments for Itchy Scalp

Massage The Scalp Regularly

Dryness often causes itchiness and the scalp becomes scaly and prone to dandruff. Regular oil massage is essential to treat itchy scalp as it stimulates blood circulation, lubricates the roots and it also removes dandruff. Massage your scalp twice a week with warm coconut oil or olive oil and leave it on overnight. Cover the head with a shower cap to let the oil seep in to the scalp and to prevent oil stains on your pillow. Next morning wash hair with a mild shampoo.

Herbal Shampoo

Herbal shampoos do not contain chemicals. They suit all types of hair and help to treat itchy scalp. You can also make a natural shampoo at home with different herbs; take dried Ritha (soap nut), dried amla and dried shikakai in equal proportion, soak them overnight in water. Next morning mash the herbs with your fingers and strain the pulp. Use the pulp to wash your hair to treat itchy scalp.

Hair Mask

Hair mask nourishes hair and it removes dandruff and flakes from itchy scalp. Use a hair mask once a week to treat itchy scalp naturally. Beat one egg; add one table spoon olive oil and a little water to make a paste. Apply on the scalp and through the hair. Cover with a shower cap and leave it on for 20 minutes. Afterwards wash it off with normal water. Egg contains protein and it treats dry and damaged hair and helps to cure itchy scalp.

Essential Oils for Itchy Scalp

Essential oils like tea tree oil, chamomile oil and Margosa oil help to cure dandruff and head lice which cause an itchy scalp. Mix a few drops of any of these oils with olive oil or coconut oil and apply in the scalp with your finger tips. Leave it on for one hour and wash hair with herbal shampoo. Essential oils remove the scales that cause itching in the scalp.

Do Not Wash Hair Frequently

Frequent hair wash aggravates dry scalp condition and it worsens itching in the scalp. You should not wash hair for more than two times a week. Use a hair cleanser after shampoo for total cleansing. Mix together 1 tea spoon each of glycerine, malt vinegar and castor oil. Apply in hair after shampoo and leave it on for 2-3 minutes. Rinse with normal water. It is an excellent moisturising cleanser to treat itchy scalp.

Drink More Water

Internal hydration is important to prevent dryness in the scalp. You must drink at least one to two litres of water every day. Take fresh fruit juice to get enough of vitamin C and eat green vegetables and salads to treat itchy scalp.
