Dry socket is a condition which arises when a tooth is extracted and leads to severe pain. It results from infections or other serious complications. Home remedies can be tried for treating the symptoms associated with dry socket.

This condition is also known as alveolar osteitis and is one of the painful dental problems. This condition occurs when tooth socket loses blood cloth. Loss of blood clot prevents the healing process which then results in dry socket.

It occurs in one to three percent of all the tooth extractions. Signs of dry socket may be visible after three to four days of tooth extraction. The pain arising due to tooth extraction may last from ten to fourteen days. Bad taste and bad odour may also be the symptoms associated with dry socket. Below are some of the remedies that can be used for treating dry socket.

Home Remedies For Dry Socket

1. Salt Water

Salt water is beneficial for the patients suffering from dry socket. Rinsing the mouth gently using warm solution of salt water would be recommended. To prepare the solution, take half teaspoon of salt and add it in one cup of lukewarm water.

Swishing the mouth with this solution would be helpful. Continue using this remedy several times on a daily basis. It is an easy remedy that can be prepared at home and has been found to be beneficial as well.

2. Cold And Hot Treatments

Alternative cold and hot treatments would be beneficial for the patients suffering from dry socket. Take a cold pack and apply it outside the face in first forty eight hours after the tooth has been extracted.

Afterwards, warm pack can be applied. These alternative cold and hot treatments would help in providing relief from swelling as well as pain associated with dry socket.

3. Water

Water is helpful in the treatment of symptoms associated with dry socket. It would help in keeping the body hydrated. Water can be used as a mouthwash to clean the socket.

Consumption of plenty of water to prevent nausea would help in reducing the pain associated with dry socket. It is considered to be a very easy home remedy for the treatment of patients.

4. Pain Relievers

Pain relievers can be used for the treatment of symptoms associated with dry socket. These pain relievers include ibuprofen and aspirin which are the drugs having anti-inflammatory properties.

This remedy is helpful in providing relief from the pain associated with dry socket. This remedy is useful in reducing the discomfort associated with dry socket.

5. Clove Oil

Clove oil is effective in the treatment of dry socket. It helps in providing relief from the pain associated with dry socket. Take few drops of clove oil and put them in a piece of soft cloth. Application of this cloth in the socket would be recommended.

Another remedy is to mix it with water. To prepare the remedy, take two to three drops of clove oil and add them in some water. Application of this solution in the socket using cotton ball would be recommended.

6. Foods To Avoid

Avoiding foods that may worsen the conditions of patients suffering from dry socket is recommended. These foods include potato chips, popcorn and nuts.

Consumption of soft foods or liquid foods would be easy for the patients. Other foods can leave food particles inside the socket which may cause tooth infection.

7. Clove Powder And Eugenol Oil

Clove powder is helpful for the treatment of dry socket. Take one teaspoon of clove powder and mix it in any essential oil like vegetable oil, olive oil or any cooking oil.

Paste can be prepared using the clove powder and the oil. Make sure not to use motor oil. This remedy has been found to be beneficial in treating the symptoms associated with dry socket.

One can also use clove and keep it in the mouth. It would help to cure but should not be taken near the dry socket. It may not act fast but has been found to be a beneficial remedy.

Eugenol oil is effective in the treatment of dry socket. It contains eugenol as an active ingredient which has a number of beneficial properties. It can be purchased from a pharmacist. It has been found to be an effective remedy against dry socket.

8. Yogurt And Ice

Yogurt is one of the popular home remedies to be used for treating various illnesses. It can be consumed as well as applied over the dry socket. It contains beneficial bacteria helpful for the patients of dry socket. After application, the affected area can be covered with a cotton ball or sterile gauze.

Ice is beneficial in the treatment of symptoms associated with dry socket. Application of ice cubes from outside would be helpful.

9. Turmeric

Turmeric is useful in the treatment of dry socket. It can be added in lukewarm water and the solution can be used for rinsing the mouth and reducing the pain associated with dry socket.

Another method of using turmeric is to prepare a mixture containing turmeric, mustard oil and salt. Application of this mixture over the dry socket gently would be recommended. This remedy helps in providing relief from the pain associated with dry socket. It helps in maintaining dental health.

10. Peroxide Solution

11. Brush Teeth, Avoid Tobacco And Smoking

Tobacco products are not good for the health of patients suffering from dry socket. Consumption of tobacco can increase the risk of diseases among the patients.
