Ginkgo biloba is useful for the patients suffering from asthma. This medicinal herb contains ginkgolide B which is helpful for the treatment of asthma. This remedy also reduces the frequency of asthma attacks.


Butterbur

Butterbur is useful for the treatment of asthma. It is a perennial herb that contains petasin and isopetasin as the active constituents of butterbur. This medicinal herb has anti-inflammatory properties which are helpful in reducing smooth muscle spasm.

The raw form of this medicinal herb should not be consumed in the form of extract, tea and capsule. Raw form of the herb contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids which are toxic to kidney and liver. It can also cause cancer. Butterbur also has side effects viz. headache, vomiting, indigestion, constipation and fatigue. Children and pregnant women should avoid consuming this herb.


Boswellia

Boswellia is useful for the treatment of asthma. This medicinal herb is helpful in inhibiting the formation of compounds called leukotrienes which are responsible for narrowing the airways.

It is also available in the form of pills. Side effects of this herb include nausea, diarrhea and digestive upset. It should not be consumed  for more than 8 or 12 weeks unless prescribed by the doctor.


Pau d’arco And Caffeine

Pau d’arco is a medicinal herb which is helpful for the patients suffering from asthma. This medicinal herb acts as a natural antibiotic and helps in reducing inflammation which is one of the symptoms associated with asthma.

Beverages like caffeine are useful for the treatment of asthma. Soft drinks with caffeine are also beneficial. Caffeine is helpful for dilating the bronchial airways.


Herbal Teas

Consumption of herbal teas is beneficial for the treatment of asthma. The herbal tea can be prepared using a number of ingredients viz. two tablespoons of powdered Indian root, two tablespoons of elecampane root, two tablespoons of granulated Echinacea root and two cups of water. After mixing all the ingredients, let the mixture settle for two hours.

Another herbal tea which is useful for the patients suffering from asthma requires various ingredients viz. one tablespoon echinacea root, one tablespoon of chamomile flowers, one tablespoon mullein leaves and one tablespoon passionflower leaves. All the ingredients can be added in one quart of boiling water. This herbal tea is good for breathing purpose.


Onion

Onion is helpful for the patients suffering from asthma. It has a number of anti-inflammatory properties which are helpful in reducing constriction of airways in an asthma attack.

Consumption of onions in raw form can cause irritation and hence one should consume cooked onions which are helpful in lessening asthma attacks.


Chilli Peppers

Chilli peppers are beneficial for the patients suffering from asthma. These are hot foods which are helpful in opening the airways. These are helpful in stimulating the fluids in mouth, lungs and throat.

It contains capsaicin which is responsible for making chilli peppers hot. It has anti-inflammatory properties which are beneficial for treating asthma.


Peppermint

Peppermint is helpful for the treatment of asthma. It can be used in the form of extract. Take one quart of non-chlorinated water in a pan and add ten drops of peppermint oil or peppermint extract in it. Boil the mixture and simmer for about one hour until the water is removed. Volatile oil would help in saturating the air in the room.


Omega 3 Fatty Acids

Omega 3 fatty acids are useful for the patients suffering from asthma. These are also available in the form of capsules. These are easily available in health stores, drug stores and can also be purchased online. EPA and DHA are some of the active ingredients of omega 3 fatty acids which have beneficial properties.

Fish oil is one of the sources of omega 3 fatty acids and can be consumed by the patients. Fish oil can also be consumed in the form of capsules. As fish oil has a fishy aftertaste after consumption of fish oil capsules, one should take the capsules just before meals. Side effects of omega 3 fatty acids may include bleeding and indigestion.


Fruits And Vegetables

Fruits and vegetables are beneficial for the patients suffering from asthma. Those who take carrots, tomatoes and green leafy vegetables in high amount have lower chances of asthma. Consumption of apples in high amount would be helpful in protecting the patients against asthma. Taking fruits and vegetables on a daily basis during childhood decreases the risk of asthma.
