Rheumatoid arthritis is a very common type of arthritis, characterized by inflamed muscle tissues and joint pain. In this condition, joints on both sides of the body get equally affected. Main target areas are wrists, knees and ankles.
It is a long-term disease and there is no-known complete cure for it. However, you can relieve its symptoms to a great extent using the following herbal remedies.
Herbal Remedies For Rheumatoid Arthritis
Yucca Root Tea
Mix one tsp. of finely-chopped roots of yucca plant in one cup of water. Boil the mixture for 20-30 minutes. Filter the liquid and leave it to cool down at room temperature. You can drink this pale, yellow, mild-tasting herbal tea two times daily, once after your breakfast and once after your dinner. It relieves swelling and pain caused by rheumatoid arthritis. This remedy, however, may cause indigestion in some people. If it does for you, stop taking it.
Cinnamon, Sarsaparilla, Marshmallow And Willow Bark
Mix one tsp. each of finely-chopped or powdered forms of cinnamon, sarsaparilla, marshmallow and willow bark together. Add this mixture in three glasses of cold water. Leave it for 5 hours, allowing the herbs to soak water thoroughly. After five hours, simmer these herbs at low heat for half an hour. Once it cools down, you can drink one cup of the resulting decoction 2-3 times a day. Those who are allergic to aspirin should avoid this herbal remedy.
Wild Lettuce Tea
If the pain and swelling caused by rheumatoid arthritis are making it difficult for you to sleep peacefully at night, you can get great relief by drinking wild lettuce tea just before retiring to bed. Crush some leaves of the wild lettuce plant thoroughly. Put one tsp. of these leaves in a cup and pour boiling water in it. Cover the mouth of the cup and let the herb infuse for fifteen to twenty minutes. Drink just one cup of the resulting herbal tea once at bedtime. To improve its taste, you can also add some honey.
Apple Cider Vinegar, Eucalyptus And Lavender
Add two cups of apple cider vinegar, two drops of eucalyptus and four drops of lavender in a tub filled with water. Soaking in this bathwater for twenty minutes everyday can be very helpful in relieving inflammation and reducing excess heat caused by rheumatoid arthritis. As an added advantage, this herbal bath also makes your skin soft and healthier.
Turmeric, Cayenne Pepper, Black Pepper And Ginger
You can prepare another great herbal tea for rheumatoid arthritis by mixing a pinch of black pepper, a pinch of cayenne pepper, one tsp. of turmeric powder and two tbsp. of ginger in three cups of cold water. Put this mixture in a container and boil it at low heat. Do not forget to cover the container. Let the herbs simmer for fifteen minutes. Sip this tea while it is hot. It does not just taste delicious but also provides warmth to your joints which eventually relieves pain, swelling and inflammation.
Juniper And Sarsaparilla
Mix ½ tbsp. of crushed sarsaparilla root and ½ tbsp. of juniper berries in one cup of cold water. Boil the mixture at low heat for ten minutes, allowing the herbs to steep thoroughly in water. Turn off the heat after ten minutes and leave the mixture for another ten minutes, not just to cool down but also to allow the herbs to settle at the bottom. Remove the liquid at the top in another cup. You can take two tsp. of this decoction 2-3 times a day.
Rosemary
The piney, resinous leaves of rosemary can be used in three ways to treat rheumatoid arthritis – as herbal tea, as herbal bath and as herbal massage. Mix two tsp. of rosemary leaves in a container of hot water. Cover the container tightly and let the herbs steep thoroughly for twenty minutes. Filter the liquid and drink one cup of it two times daily.
For herbal bath, you can mix some rosemary leaves in bath water and soak in it for half an hour once daily.
For herbal massage, you can use the extracts of rosemary leaves as massage oil. Massaging with rosemary infused oil can be very effective in soothing pain, swelling and inflammation caused by rheumatoid arthritis. This herbal massage also makes your skin healthier.
Cardamom, Ginger, Reishi And Licorice
Mix ½ tsp. of cardamom powder, four medium slices of fresh ginger, one tbsp. of chopped reishi roots and small pieces of one medium stick of licorice root in two quarts of water. Simmer all these herbs at low heat for ten minutes. There is no need to filter the liquid. You can just leave the container for another fifteen minutes and all the leftovers will settle at the bottom. Remove the top liquid in another container. Drink it once daily (preferably early in the morning on an empty stomach) for a week. Try this remedy on alternative weeks for best results.
Pleurisy Root Tea
You can prepare another herbal infusion for rheumatoid arthritis by steeping one tsp. of pleurisy root powder in one cup of hot water. Take 2-3 ounces of this decoction two times daily.
Frankincense, Rosemary, Eucalyptus And Olive Oil
Mix three drops of frankincense oil, ten drops of rosemary oil, ten drops of eucalyptus oil and one tbsp. of organic virgin oil together. Massaging your body, specifically joints, using this herbal infusion will bring you great relief from pain, swelling and inflammation.
Jamaican Dogwood
Mix one tsp. of dried and chopped roots of the Jamaican dogwood in half glass of boiling water in a closed container. For added flavor, you can also consider adding a pinch of both cinnamon and sarsaparilla. Simmer the herbs at low heat for ten minutes. Once the mixture cools down, you can drink it. Take this decoction once everyday. Discontinue it when the condition improves. Consistent long-term use of this herbal remedy is not advisable. In general, this remedy can be very beneficial particularly in relieving nighttime joint pain caused by rheumatoid arthritis.
Feverfew Tincture Or Capsules
Though feverfew tea can also be used to relieve the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, considering the very fact that feverfew tastes severely bitter, most herbal practitioners prescribe this herb in the form of capsules or tinctures. It can be very effective in relieving inflammation and pain.
Devil’s Claw
You can prepare a strong decoction using the roots of devil’s claw plants by steeping it in hot water for 20 minutes. The decoction thus prepared can be taken once daily. Though its effects are slower as compared to other herbal remedies, it does bring steady relief for rheumatoid arthritis patients from join pain.
Beeswax, Coconut Oil And Comfrey Slave
Mix four tbsp. of beeswax, 1//4 cup of coconut oil and ¾ cup of comfrey infused oil together. Massaging with this herbal infusion can be very effective in relieving sore muscles and aching joints.
