Psoriasis is a kind of skin disease in which the skin becomes red and thick. Symptoms of psoriasis include pain, inflammation, itchiness, red patches etc.

Knees, back, elbows and scalp are some of the affected parts of the body. It is caused by malfunctioning of immune system.

Stress, genetic, environmental and hormonal factors are some of the factors that affect psoriasis. Infections caused by bacteria may also lead to psoriasis. Though it is not a serious disease, it can cause extreme discomfort and irritation.

Avoid Smoking

Smoking can worsen the condition, so one should avoid it. Also, those who smoke are more likely to be affected with the disease. It can be even more dreadful in case of women. Quitting smoking is always good and can prevent a number of diseases.


Sun Exposure

Exposing the body under the sunlight for twenty minutes a day and three days per week would be beneficial for the body. Sunlight containing ultraviolet light is helpful in the treatment of psoriasis. Consult the doctor before sun exposure as it may not be safe for the patients taking medicines.


Taking Bath

Taking bath is good for the patients of psoriasis. One should use lukewarm water and avoid using hot water that can cause skin dryness. Salt, oil and oatmeal can be added to the bath water. After taking bath, don’t use towel and dry off the skin. Apply moisturizer afterwards. Avoid bathing frequently as it can cause the skin to dry out.


Keeping the Skin Moist

Applying moisturizer over the skin would be very beneficial as it helps in keeping the skin moist and prevent dryness. Dry skin is the reason of a number of bad conditions of the skin like itchiness, irritation etc. After applying moisturizer, the affected area can be wrapped with a plastic wrap. It is helpful in holding the moisture. The plastic wrap can be replaced after being used.


Baking Soda

Use baking soda after diluting it in water. Add one and a half cups of baking soda in three gallons of water. Dip a piece of cloth in the solution and apply over the infected area. It helps in reducing the itchiness associated with psoriasis.


Mustard Oil

Mustard oil can be used to prepare an antiseptic lotion that helps in the treatment of psoriasis. Add two hundred fifty grams of mustard oil in ½ kilo of Neem tree leaves. Boil the mixture until the leaves are burnt completely.


Petroleum Jelly

Petroleum jelly is one of the ointments that can be applied over the infected area. It is a thick ointment that can be used after taking bath. Other such heavy skin creams can be used. Apply ointment over the infected area during sleeping and wrap bandage over it. Wash the area gently in the morning.


Avoid Alcohol

People who suffer from psoriasis should not consume alcohol. Men are more affected with psoriasis than women. Women should not consume more than one drink in a day while men should limit it as two drinks per day.


Maintain Healthy Body Weight

Obesity can be related to psoriasis. One should reduce the weight and maintain a healthy body weight. Eating fruits and vegetables is beneficial and frequent exercising can also be good for maintaining a good health. Eliminating less nutritious foods in the diet would be useful.


Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is helpful in soothing the skin and reducing psoriasis. Gel form of this aloe vera is helpful in healing the wounds and soothing the skin. It is helpful in reducing the plaques. Aloe vera gel can also be used in combination with garlic oil.


Oats

Extract of oats is useful in reducing itchiness and soothing the skin. It is one of the ingredients in skin care products as well. Oatmeal can be added in bath water that can be useful for the patients of psoriasis.


Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is helpful in soothing the burns and in reducing the inflammation caused by psoriasis. It acts as a disinfectant and can be used as a compress. Prepare the compress by adding one cup of apple cider vinegar in one gallon water.

Soak a piece of cloth in the compress and apply over the infected area. It would help in reducing itchiness caused by psoriasis. It can be used in the form of liquid that can be used for soaking fingernails in it. The liquid can be applied using cotton ball that helps in preventing plaques.


Olive Oil

Olive oil can be used for reducing the symptoms of psoriasis on the scalp. Warm the olive oil and massage it over the scalp. It helps in softening the dead skin and removing the dead cells. Afterwards, shampoo can be used for cleaning and then rinsing the scalp. Another remedy is to mix two teaspoons of olive oil in one glass of milk. This decoction can be added to the bath water.


Mineral & Vegetable Oil

Mineral oil is helpful in soothing the skin. Add the oil in the bath water and soak the skin in it. Vegetable oil can also be used in a similar way. Adding a cup of vegetable oil in the bath water and using it for taking bath would be a good remedy for reducing psoriasis.


Epsom Salt

Add Epsom salt in the bath water. It would be helpful in healing the skin and reducing the swelling caused by psoriasis. Sea water can also be used in place of Epsom salt. Add sea salt in bath water and take regular bath using it.

Reducing the stress is important as it triggers psoriasis and makes the condition even worse. Meditation and yoga are the good relaxation techniques that are helpful in reducing the stress.

Meditation can be helpful in reducing the stress and yoga is also one of the natural ways of relaxation which helps in improving the blood flow over the infected area. Massaging is another natural method that helps in relieving stress.


Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is helpful in reducing the symptoms of psoriasis. It can be used along with olive oil. Take one cup of olive oil and heat it. Avoid overheating and add ten to fifteen drops of tea tree oil in it. Mix the mixture well and pour it in the bottle. Massaging this mixture over the scalp would be useful in the treatment of psoriasis.
