Itching is an unpleasant sensory experience which evokes ‘scratching’ (which is not a solution!) as an instant defence mechanism. Body itching can be caused due to a host of factors some of which are infection, allergy, infestation, response to weather change and medical disorder.
They can be mild to damaging and thus should not be treated with neglect but with care and interest. The top five home remedies which are routinely followed and are easily implemented are as follows.
Baking soda has been known long enough to lessen itches due to chemical properties of bicarbonate that it is formed of. So, soaking in a baking soda bath is a nice way to come to ease with itches. The ritual: one cup of baking soda is added to a tub of warm water; then the body is soaked in it for half to one hour and is then, it is air dried.
Baking soda paste which is made by adding three parts of baking soda to one part of water can be used to treat localised itches. But this should be avoided in case the skin in broken.
Owing to the anaesthetic and anti-inflammatory properties of the aromatic components of lemon, it is widely used to treat itchy skin.
Moreover lemon fights infection for it contains calcium, magnesium, vitamin C and citric acid among other essential itch-relieving constituents. Squeezed undiluted lemon juice applied to itchy skin and allowed to dry dampens itching sensations and brings relief.
These berries which are easily available in grocery stores contain anti-inflammatory volatile substances and when these get mixed with cloves (containing eugenol) a certain mixture is formed which causes itches to depart completely.
This is herbal remedy at its best. Basil contains high amount of eugenol which is a wonderful anaesthetic. Applying to the skin, basil tea made by boiling dry basil leaves in a covered (such that the aroma is not lost) container gives relief. The cloth used for application should be disinfected. The tea should be cooled before use. Mint which contains commendable amounts of menthol is valued as a treatment for itchy skin.
The anti-inflammatory and anaesthetic properties of menthol and rosmarinic acid (which is readily absorbed by the skin) can be put to use by making a mint tea rinse which further is made by boiling dry mint leaves in a covered container. The tea is allowed to cool and a clean cloth dipped in it is used to apply it to the itchy region.
Aloe Vera which is exceedingly useful to cause relief to burning sensation works well for itches too. The procedure is easy: Aloe Vera leaves are snapped first; then they are sliced through the middle and finally the obtained gel is rubbed with care on the concerned area.
Body itching is not season specific, they may happen any moment and due to reasons unclear. Therefore, these top five home remedies which are bound to show results should come handy to the person suffering.
