Iodine

One of the very essential things necessary for the proper functioning of thyroid gland is Iodine. So in hypothyroidism you have to increase the intake of iodine in your diet which will stimulate the thyroid hormone production.

Use sea salt which is rich in iodine instead of common salt. Other natural sources of iodine include fish, potato, milk, yoghurt, eggs, meat, walnut etc.


Ginger

Ginger has a lot of medicinal values and is a boon for people suffering from hypothyroidism. It is rich in zinc, potassium and magnesium. Its anti inflammatory property brings a lot of relief and improves the functionality of thyroid.

You can use ginger in many ways. Prepare ginger tea from fresh ginger slices by boiling in water. Consume ginger in soups and other preparations. Ginger powder can be used in baked foods like cookies and muffins.


Long Pepper

Indian long pepper (pipali) is said to be very effective in increasing thyroid hormone levels. It also acts as a powerful stimulant for digestive and respiratory systems.

For more effectiveness, mix equal quantities of long pepper powder, black pepper powder and dry ginger powder. Take half teaspoon of this powder in lukewarm water and drink twice a day. It gives a lot of relief from thyroid related problems.


Coconut Oil

Another easily available ingredient to treat hypothyroidism at home is coconut oil. It not only helps in improving the metabolism rate of the body but also improves the functionality of thyroid due to the presence of medium chain fatty acids.

Add two tablespoon of coconut oil to milk and drink in the morning. Replace vegetable oil or cooking oil with coconut oil for cooking, which can bring in lot of improvements in thyroid gland functioning.


Flax seed

Flax seeds are a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids which are essential for smooth functioning of the thyroid gland. Use of flax seeds and flax seed oil is recommended in patients suffering from hypothyroidism only after consultation with the physician.

A tablespoon of ground flax seeds can be taken with water every day on empty stomach. A teaspoon of Flax seed oil helps in improving the functioning of thyroid gland and in preventing constipation.


Healthy Diet

Maintaining a healthy diet is crucial for the people suffering from hypothyroidism. Metabolism is badly hit in this condition and slow metabolic rate hugely contributes to weight gain. So having a healthy and well balanced diet improves metabolic rate and helps in controlling adverse effects of hypothyroidism.

Include adequate amount of fiber rich food and iodine rich food your diet. Increase the intake of rice, barley, Bengal gram, moong dal and cucumber. Avoid cruciferous vegetables like cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, Brussels sprouts as these contain a natural thyroid blocker. Limit caffeine and alcohol and drink plenty of water.


 

Regular exercise is good for one’s body and mind. For people suffering from hypothyroidism, exercise helps not only in keeping the weigh under control but also helps in fighting depression and related problems. Do not over exert and stress yourself.

Alternatively yoga postures can also be practiced which have positive effect on the endocrine system by stimulating thyroid glands. Sarvangasana (Shoulder Stand), Matsyasana (Fish Pose) and Setu Bandha Sarvangasana (Bridge Pose) are the effective yoga poses for hypothyroidism. Pranayama can also be practiced which hugely benefits in maintaining a balanced metabolism.


Juice Fasting

One of the natural ways to rectify hypothyroidism is by juice fasting. The main purpose to go on juice fasting is to cleans the body. Have fruits juices such as apple, grapes and pineapples after every three to four hours. After following the juice fasting for 5 days, you can include milk in the diet. Then the normal balanced diet can be continued.Apart from these home remedies, get your thyroid levels checked regularly and take necessary actions.
